Clicking noise in engine area...

My service engine light is on and truck vibrated (rough idle) a little right after startup.
Used my Peake OBD to read the codes.
Two codes displayed on the Peake are 8C and 21.

If I have the right code table
8C = “Fuel Injector, Cyl #4”
21 = "Engine noise too high”

Is this a bad injector, bad spark plug, valley pan issue, valve cover gasket issue?

2001 BMW X5
163,000 miles
(just had oil change and changed right rear wheel speed sensor)

Thanks in advance.

Talked to a technician...said I probably need a coil replaced.

Pulled ignition coil #4. The problem may be oil in the spark plug

well. The end of the ignition coil boot had a little bit of oil as well. Looks like I need a valley pan gasket replacement. The clicking noise is still there so maybe it's valve cover gasket related. The noise does not go away unless I turn the engine off.

How can you write a year and mileage, but not an engine you have?
Valley pan and DISA Valve don't coexist in any neither engines X5 is fitted with.

Oops! Forgot to include that I have the 4.4i M62

I was doing a search for clicking noise in engine bay area and the disa or adjuster seemed like the logical part based on the sound from more than one video that I viewed and listened to. I have no clue yet so I was throwing ideas out and hoping someone might have an answer. Hoping it's not a more serious chain issue.

Does this noise go away when you rev the engine?

No, I believe it got faster with higher revving. I don't think it's the lifters either.

Is this a 6 or V8?

NittanyX5 10-06-2012 10:38 PM

4.4i V8

I guess the 8C code is related to the ticking sound and the 21 code is related to the 4th cylinder.

got the driver's side valve cover gasket off and I see

the broken timing rail piece is broken. About to call an indy now. I guess a decision on whether to repair or junk it is coming soon.
