All kinds of conflicting information, so I thought I'd ask "The Group"
If you are going to replace your front tires 06 X5 3.0 (same front and rear sizes)
Would you put the new tires on the rear or front?
Assume if putting the old tires on the other axle of course

I try to replace tires 4 at a time. Otherwise put the new tires on the front. The fronts do most of the work: braking and turning.

Always, always always put your good tires where your steering and braking happens.

Granted, you can steer a car with the gas pedal on a rear wheel drive vehicle...but, for this exercise, put the good tires up front.:D

Personally, I would put them on the front; as noted above, that is what you depend on for steering and braking. Actually, I would buy four, but sometimes that isn't practical.

Tire Rack and other tire stores will tell you to put them on the back. That is because they are more concerned about oversteer than understeer, and worry about the liability they incur if a vehicle breaks loose in the rear with insufficient tread. I think that the inclusion of DSC and ABS negates that risk to a large degree.

I agree JCL. Also, BMW's from the factory have a fair amount of understeer built into them. Really evident at the track.

If I've ever needed to replace two, I always put them in the rear.
All tire places and dealers advise to place new tires in rear.
Don't go against the flow, or reinvent the wheel (pun intended)!

On vehicles running a square tire set up I'll typically put my new tires up front if I'm only buying two tires.

A square setup will actually move the vehicle toward a neutral setup...it's still understeers like a pig...but is better than an offset setup. Wide in the rear and narrow in front induces that much more understeer.

OP, are you worried about oversteer or understeer? How worn are your used tires that you're keeping? Are they performance summer compound or what?

Either way, I'll stick by my statement of putting new on the front. These vehicles understeer, they have AWD and DSC. So, fear not. Put the new tires on the front and then go drive it like you stole it. Who knows, you might be able to get that rear end hanging out in the turns if you do it properly.:D

OK, "here's the thing", I wanted to put the new Yokos on the front, tire shop said put them on the rear, big poster from one of the BIG tire companies says to put them on the rear, so I did that.
They switched the "old" rears (Michelin XVS 4 plus) to the front...they have about 4 to 5 32" tread remaining.
I Immediately noticed that the truck is much quieter, and seems more "solid?"
The truck is mainly used around town with a short burst on I 95, once in a while...
