Update on the "steering wheel click"...
The purpose of this thread is to consolidate information regarding this issue and hopefully someone can identify a fix!
I have read every thread I could find about this issue: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ring-my-x.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...heel-play.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ick-clunk.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-question.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ing-wheel.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...i-replace.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...inion-huh.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ng-issues.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ing-wheel.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...eel-click.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ing-wheel.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...lac-noise.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ng-column.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...eel-click.html http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ng-column.html To date, it seems there is no known solution to this problem despite the fact that many members have had this issue. Some members had the steering rack or column replaced under warranty and this did resolve the issue for many, but not all. I've tried lubricating the double joint with white lithium grease, and it masked the problem temporarily but now it seems to have come back with a vengeance. Today I pulled apart everything under the steering wheel in an attempt to find something loose, but I came up empty. I pulled out my stethoscope and I can confirm that the noise is coming from somewhere within the cabin, certainly not as far down as the U-joint in the engine bay. I thought I heard it towards the firewall but couldn't find anything there that could be a source of the sound. If anyone has had success with this issue, please share! |

Service adviser suggested to live with it.A good one,no? |

I remember Weasel saying that worn out joint universal joint makes that clicking. It's in my ToDo list, but not a # 1 subject,so as soon as I get to it,am gonna share the results.

Yea same with me. I traced it there too. Happens rarely enough not to care right now. Most won't notice.

I had a squealing noise and then a clicking noise in the steering wheel. It got a lot worse to the point I had jerk the wheel to turn past a point. It was a worn steering universal joint. If you replace the universal, replace the bushing that sits above the universal (on the firewall). First, spray the universal down with silicone. If it sounds better, it's the universal.
