strange response

I changed my fuel filter. with oem brand. filled up full gas tank.
drove 40 miles and a quarter of the tank gone.... .weird..
filled up full again. this is fueled up with premium gas...

next day i drove 4 miles and than the throttle became stange...
it felt weak and unresponsive. when i floored it, it didnt budge. kind of pushing and stopping response....

weird but than it got better...

what could cause these weird activitys?

TerminatorX5 10-30-2012 09:03 AM

restricted fuel flow, perhaps? somethink kinked?
or low fuel pressure? leak somewhere? siphoning?
any fuel smell, puddles on the ground?

Is "OEM" the brand name or is it Mahle, Mann ...? If it's the brand name, it is NOT a good brand. There is an aftermarket company selling parts under OEM name.

May sound silly, but you did install everything correctly, right? Not backwards? Sometimes it's the simple stuff that'll get missed.

hmmmm, I dont think thats my problem... but yea its the correct way. I made sure of that. If you install it wrong than it doesnt start at all.

The OEM part number, which happens to be made by Mahle, I dont think BMW would make there own fuel filter.

I dont know why it would be restricted, worked fine for 50 miles. not a problem. nothing kinked. and fuel pump works.... no puddles. smells or leaks... and i dont think it could be bad gas either... and it doesnt feel like a air intake problem either....

Curious why you changed your fuel filter in the first place. Were you addressing some symptoms or just preventive maintenance? Did you have some other work done recently that could be related? Just trying to see if you had no problems prior to your current issue.

theblue 10-30-2012 11:36 AM

if the original wasn't having any problems you could try swapping back if you still have it.

yes just preventive maintance, and did another oil change. looks like theres a small leak in the oil pan. and it burns oil. after 2k miles the oil was filthy. So im trying castrol titatinum synt, maybe it will last longer than 2k.

i have the old fuel filter. its exactly the same. brand and number. exact!

and i just took the X for a spin during work break, it seem fine now?! accelerates like before.

I guess i'll just put some fuel injector cleaner for now.

Air pockets in the new filter? May take some time to work the bubbles out.

BMW don't make their own filters, but they do buy filters made to their own specification. Those suppliers also make similar filters and sell them directly. Not necessarily the same, even if it looks the same. And this leaves aside the problem of fake Mahle and Mann filters being made in China and sold through NAPA and other big name stores.

Take it out and see if it is different.

so what are you recommending?
and looks like it was air bubbles thats the best posibilty

I buy filters from the dealer, in part because that is the only way of guaranteeing that you get a filter with the same performance spec, and also because it greatly reduces the chance of getting counterfeit parts, which are a huge business.

ok, heres a question for you....
how do you handle talking down the parts guy.....i always have to argue a bit... even when i have an ebay listing from a different dealership they still dont like to apply their discounts. and cca memeber discount is much...

once i bought a oil filter for $9 and now its 12$ with cca discount...why does the dealers parts go up and down?

but i do see where your going on this... i think i would trust the dealer more...

JCL 11-01-2012 03:31 PM

I don't try and talk down the parts guy. When he punches the order in, I ask if they have included all the loyalty discounts in there (they don't have any official loyalty discount that I know about). I just make the point that I am a long term customer, and see if there is any discretionary discount (sometimes there is). I make sure that they sell it to me under my name in their system, and not just to cash sale, so there is a record of all the purchases. Their CRM system is pretty good, IMO.

Then I pay the bill. I am not going to waste time arguing for $3, it is completely irrelevant in the overall scheme of things.

I would never ask them to match an ebay price, since they aren't ebay. They have a different cost base and business model. I consider ebay to be full of fraudsters and crooks (along with some honest people) so I won't use it. Ever.
