check engine light bulb?
hey everyone.. i have a 2001 4.4i and my check engine light is not coming on.. i have a scanner and i do have a code but no light.. also when i start the truck or but the key on the light doesnt show.. i even did the cluster test and no light... i know the light was working a couple of weeks ago due to another code... so my question is.. how do i change this bulb.. i know how to take the cluster out but i didnt see anything in the back of the cluster for the check engine light bulb.. thanks

is it a bulb or led?
i dont know
WDS says it is an LED... but has no further description... :(
so what should i do?
What is the code? Not all codes trip the SES light.
since there is no socket for a bulb, have your soldering iron ready for the onboard LED
i thought there would be some type of charm or something to let u know the led is out..wat if someone cuts the soldering wire to take the light off

A number of years ago member in CT found that a previous owner had removed the LED in the CEL prior to selling. I advised him to check Radio Shack for a replacement and he removed the cluster, replaced the LED, put everything back in and found out why it had been removed; The CEL was on and several hundred dollars later he was able to get it to turn off.
Soooooo, if your LED has been removed I suspect there may be an under laying reason and the removal of the LED was the cheapest fix! |
Do the cluster test in the hidden menu first to see if its truly out. Hold down right knob on cluster till it says test. Hit it again to go to test two, then hit the left knob. Should run through a cluster test. If its out, it's probably a real bulb. Cel's are emissions related generally speaking and usually are able to be changed. That said. It's possible it's that stupid mini bulb you can only get from the dealer.
