Looking to do some upgrades!!
I have an 06 X5 4.4i and I am looking to upgrade and customize it a little. It is a sport package with NAV. I have googled after market parts and upgrades but haven't really found anything that is good quality. Im wanting to change anything that will make a good difference. I want to start out doing the least expensive things first but any ideas anyone has would be much appreciated.

here are a few ideas

Check out some 4.8 tips, thats always a good way to beef up the look of the rear.
Even little things like LED's in the corners and license plate bulbs can make it visually distinct from other X's on the road at night. The LED tails aren't expensive either.... |
what color is your X? you can black out things using Plasti-Dip - if you like it, you keep it, if you don't like it, you peel it off...
|
Thank you all for the replies. Mine is gray. I wish it was black the black ones look a lot nicer I think. How do I insert a pic that is on my comp and does not have a URL?

go advanced, manage attachments... they have to no bigger than certain size - if it is too big, it will tell you...

Awesome thanks. Well now here are a couple pics.
|
looks nice... not sure if blacking out will bring out a character... on the other hand, i think one of the members here has this combo... let me find his screen name...
|
pnoyako85 - search for his car, i think he has your color...
|
Thank you. Ok I will. Do I just type his name into the forum search? Im sorry Im new this is my first day on here.
|
hey!!! welcome to the board!!! silly me - i just noticed that you just signed up!!! you will find this board to be very informative...
You can search for him on the Member List, and then look up some of his posts, he has his cars' pics in his signature line... speaking of signature line, i would recommend creating one for yourself, that would have some basic info on your ride - year, engine... maybe miles... or whatever you like... it helps us helping you with diagnosting problems... |
Nice looking X! Start by browsing the thread "post pictures of your X5". You will get a ton of ideas. Do searching on this forum from there to dig deeper.
In my opinion a proper set of wheels and tires is the best modification for any car or truck. From there the sky is the limit but beware you will never be satisfied that it is "done". |
Personally, I think your (Sterling) Gray X5 looks great the way it is. You already have some great & some subtle combos/features that make it stand out just fine like:
Little subtle things I'm considering:

Thank you very much. I love my X. I didn't realize that so much of the stuff that is on my car isn't on most of them. I new to the BMW world. I only bought mine about 2 months ago. Im not real sure what all options I actually have either. This is kinda like a new language for me. I still want a few things like the clear corners and an exhaust and maybe an intake but I want to start cheap. I saw a chrome accent kit but it attaches with that 3M 2-sided tape so Im cautious of using it. I really want the front and rear cameras to. How do I know exactly what options I do have and what I can upgrade? I read about people who have rear climate control and rear heated seats. Mine doesn't have that but it would be nice to have.
|
what are your last 7 digits of VIN? I will get you list of factory options... In BMW world, de-chroming means the car has sport package - so, you probably don't want to put chrome accents on, unless that is your personal preference...
clear corners are Euro thing, illegal in the US unless you have some amber reflectors in the front quarter of the car - to get euro light assemblies, you are looking at $1000-2000... or taking your lights apart and pulling the ambers out... cumbersome... rear camera - doable, if you have Nav system - still calls for a number of additional parts... no Nav - still doable, but either totally aftermarket, or retrofitting a Nav, which is doable but a nightmare... front camera = might not be what you think it is - the E53 front camera is not the same as the new, Topview cameras... and to be honest, too much hassle to install... depending on present options, you might be prewired for the rear heated seats, but you still will need to get the seats that have the heating elements (or fit them into your seats) and possibly a module along with the switches... one thing at a time... we will guide you to your perfect set up!!!! lol |
Thank you for all the help. My VIN last 7 are LV22335. Im not sure about the front camera or what it would be used for anyways. I just saw the kit somebody else had done and it just had both with it.

Looks like you have the rear climate control...it is code S533A. You activate it by turning the left dial (on the vent at the rear of the center console) from "0 to |"...this should activate the blower for that vent...then the right dial with the red & blue indicators is how you temper the air from warm to cool. :)
|
Wow that's a lot of stuff. Thanks for the info and for all your help so far. Theres a few things I'm going to have to research to know exactly what it is though.
|
i speak fluent russian, so it is relatively easy for me to do... besides, i am having fun, learning about options that were not available in the US, like double glazing...
|
What you don't understand...just ask. There's enough knowledge here that as a collective..we should be able to make sense of it all. :D
|
Qsilver7 I do have the rear climate control but I don't have the one with the knobs or with the heated seats. I thought the rear climate control that I have was just like the basic one. Mine lookes like this..
|
1 Attachment(s)
it didnt attach my pic lets try again.. ok finally got it after having to crop the crap out of it to size it down.
|
yeap, this is it...
you see these 4 blank plugs? the top row of plugs is used for the rear seat heating (i have to get to my other laptop to see if you are pre wired for the rear seat heating). the bottom row is used in markets other than US, left is for AV input for TV module and the right is for TV switch button... The TV module is useless in the US as we moved to digital signal that is not compatible with the rest of the world but could be useful for the rear camera retrofit... |
1 Attachment(s)
Yep...thats the E53 rear climate option...but as listed in your options above...you don't have the rear heated seats.
The pic below (I just went out to garage to take a snap shot) shows both options. Sorry about the icon screw up...I've only had my X5 since Thursday...and it has been dark everytime Ive looked in the back seat..I couldn't see that the upper icon on the left was that of a "fan". (oops) :) |
Oh one little slip of the icon is nothing. So if mine is wired for the heated seats I still have a lot to buy with either a whole new back seat or the element and then the controls. Is there anything else I would need? Maybe I could find everything from one thats been wrecked by some poor individual who now hates their life for damaging such a beautiful creation!

Mike, i like your "nature" pics... I should have done picture hanging by a thread on the hanging bridges in Costa Rica, but I guess I was too scared to look outside!!!
I have not considered the LED interior lights but now, since seeing yours, I might consider that mod - should be very simple... Mike, do you remember, which of the guys from the meet had LED tail lights and they were fast flickering when the lights were on? I think I found an entry in the FSW file that says LED tail lights - it might help with flickering and keep the Brake Force Display still active. Mike, do you have heated front seats? |
Quote:
4.8mnster's truck..........right now hs truck is getting AIR management...meaning u can Manually adjust the air ride any height you want...... -No i dont have heated seats opt it out..lol..and went for sports pckg |
Dang awesome SAV man. That makes my X look so pitiful. :( I hate to even know how much all that cost you. I really like that rear bumper. That gives a completely different look just with that. I thought about doing the interior LEDs cause I saw them on another post but no one had answered about whether or not they still dim or not and if you have any errors or not. Where would you suggest that I start in order to stay cheap and in the DIY arena?
|
One of the X5s I test drove before buying mine had the manual adjustable ride height. I didn't know much about it though. Mine doesn't have it though. It would be cool though probably.
|
i've heard through this forum that lowered ride is a bit too harsh... i am fine with the regular ride but i wanted to see if i can force the computer to lower the car when i am in Park, for the ease access - my little girl is fighting with the door sill everytime she needs to get in or out... through INPA you can set it up to anything within the range but it stays "permanent" as a new "motorway" setting... I am still researching this programming...:dunno:
I managed to fool the car to close the sunroof when the car is off with the water hitting the windshield, but when the rain sensor stays active it disables the EWS, and I can't lock the car - it thinks that engine is running... hahahaha... can't win.... so, back to schematics...:D |
Yeah I would hate to know how much would go into figuring out all the electronics. You would do very well if you could figure it all out and start a business though.
|
Do you have a programmer? I saw one guy that said he bought one off ebay and was now able to roll his windows up with the fob and I think it was the same one that said he can remote start now. I would love to have a remote start option but everything Ive searched is just aftermarkets that make you carry around another fob.

"programmer" is sold on ebay indeed, you should be looking for a cable and INPA, EDIABAS, NCSExpert keywords... chances are, the seller is in Eastern Europe, somewhere in romania... folks in eastern europe have seriously hacked into bmw electronics, i had them do some programming on my 4.6, when they russified the Nav computer to talk in russian and display cyrillic, they updated the radio to pull US and Euro stations (i can't do it on the newer 4.8!!!), removed the gong for seat belts, key in ignition - that is when i learned for the first time about the programming...
one of the programmings that I had done and you might consider, removing those annoying gongs (the dash light for seat belt is still there), getting high beams to work at the same time with the front fogs, lock the doors as you start driving... those are thngs you can do with the sw and the cable... i also synched the car clock to GPS time beacon... without the cable you can adjust the speed sensitive volume - search for GAL in the forum, there will be instructions... also, if Slick stops by this thread, in his signature line there is a direct link to OBD test functions, such as digital tach, digital speedo, battery voltage, coolant temp... you just press the right knob on the cluster, it will reset your trips to zero, but keep on holding until you see test... Test 2 is nice display show of the cluster... all the other tests call for unlocking the cluster - instructions are on this forum... |
here is the ride heights in mm as prescribed from the factory:

previous owner must've activated the drive-away feature... also, there might be Intravee or an ICE (InCarEntertainment) or other module in your car - aftermarket... did you test the ipod dock to see if it works?
as far as programming goes - you must be super careful, or you will end up with a super expensive paperweight in your driveway... lol... |
Here's the info on UNLOCKING the instrument cluster to access the 21 OBC TESTs...you can see the instructions in the pic below...and click the link to see the definition of all the 21 TESTs:
|
to unlock the tests you go into the test mode, click until you come to test 19, it will flip between lock/unlock, you press the knob and then press it until you see 15, then you press the left knob, it should unlock your particular cluster (LV22335 = 2+2+3+3+5=15)... then you will have the other functions open... don't kill your battery in the process, lol...

Yeah i keep my ipod plugged up all the time. on the ipod it says attached to BMW or something like that. I can go look in a minute and let you know for sure. As far as the programming goes thats what Im afraid of. I really dont want to mess anything up.
|
What exactly are those tests for? What do they do for you?
|
some show the RPMs of the engine in digital format, the other one - the speed in km/h, the other one coolant temp... sometimes you are trying to troubleshoot something, and need that info... otherwise, for a normal driver - no need to venture into there... but... who says we are "normal"???!!!!
|
my ipod says "attached to accessory" and has the BMW logo. theres just a black chord coming out of the glove box for it. my head unit reads it but only as track numbers no artist or song titles

all im waiting for is ESS coming out with a Supercharger in Jan 2013 $10k rough estimate......... then dropping the car with Billsteins and springs (H&R or Vaughland) w/labor maybe $2K? and i think that would be it........ |
Dang. I thought about doing the turbo but that will be later on. I wanna stick with the cheaper stuff right now. and with the exhausts ive seen at being like $4k I think im gonna have to try and find a way around buying an exhaust. Your exhaust sounds really nice in the video by the way.

I don't know which would actually sound better. every car is different. I had flow master 44s on my dodge pickup but it was a 5.9L with no cats. So I cant really compare the 2.

you have the option S522A, which is Level 5 option, so all the below options are prewired in your car:
Level 2 S235 - trailer hitch S502 - SRA (whatever it is) S508 - PDC S609 - Nav S624 through S629 - telephone/radio Level 3 S248 - steering wheel heater S261 - rear airbags (interesting, I wonder if this is retrofittable) S265 - RDC, tire pressure S461 - backrest heating system in the rear S496 - seat heating system in the rear S533 - rear air conditioner S536 - auxialliary heating system Level 4 S220 - single axle level control Level 5 S522 - xenon lights |
Quote:
some people are not happy with xpipe and need more tone...(like me)...so i had to do more..lol |
Quote:
|
trailer hitch - ONLY BMW original, nothing else!!! with dealer's labor - about $1000.
steering wheel - it was done, you need the wheel, a special contact ring, and i think a fuse to complete the link... for the seats, you will need the seat and the back (from a wrecked one) or figure how to stick the aftermarket heating pads into your seats... you will need the 61316988957, the switch, about $70 from a dealer, you need two... i am checking to see if you need a relay or whatnot... to see if you are really prewired, you might want to yank the rear seat up (it is pressure fitted, no screws, no bolts)... just place your hand on the edge of the seat, approx "between" the legs of the rear right passenger, and yank it hard up... then, place your hand on the edge of the cushion "between" the legs of the left passenger, and do the same thing... the middle seatbelt does not come off (needs to be unscrewed, no need now), so you would need to pull it and feed through the hole opening of the seat as you move the seat away from the base - the seat will not be completely out but you can stick you hands around to see if there are any wires/connectors that are hurled away, taped or hidden... if you find them, your chances of successfull retrofit are increasing... lol.... |
I think I may be in luck. I just checked and there is all kinds of wires underneath the back seat.
|
the next one will be to find tucked away connectors under the central console...
under your center armrest there is a storage bin. that bin is pressure fit as well, it could have a piece of velcro at the back, where the armrest's hinges are - you put your hands inside the bin, and applying side ways pressure to the walls of the bin, pull it up... do it gently - some of them will pop up really fast, some of them are stuck... could be stuck on velcro... if it does not give easily, do not force it... once the bin is out, you will see an plastic/cardboard tube, shaped in "S" - one end of the S goes at the bottom front of the central console, pulling A/C and the other end blows it out the vent holes... that S is just snapped in - look carefully at how it is sitting there, because fitting the bottom back might be a bitch... once the S is out, you will see two sets of wires going to the FAN turn wheel and the hot/cold wheel... try to find other wires that would be connectors for the heater switches - if you find them, your chances are growing exponentially!!! |
Ok that one I cant get to come out. I can get it to rock back and forth but it wont come out and I didn't want to force it. I can however see a few wires down in there through the holes in the back where the arm rest attaches
|

plug X792 - backrest heater
plug X337 - seat heater plug X636 - switch (left). right is identical. Now, all you need just the seat and the back rest... easy!!! :nanana: |
K93 - is an automotive relay... goes in the trunk, right side, where the subwoofer sits.. if you have sub... otherwise, just the bunch of fuses and relays...
do not force the console thing - do a search on this forum, there should be a write up - i just don't remember off the top of my head... sorry... :( |
Thanks a lot man. I did have a sub according to the dealership but someone took it out. Not sure if I wanna put the stock one back in or upgrade. The stock is cheaper from what Ive seen. Im gonna start searching tomorrow for the seat and backrest. Thanks again. You've been a lot of help already. Everyone has. As long as money holds out Im sure with everyones help Ill have a really amazing X5 in no time.
|
good luck... if you really go for it, keep us posted - i myself got interested in the rear airbag retrofit - supposedly the car is prewired for it, i would need the air modules about $200 a pop, and the most expensive piece would be the rear door panels.. and then - off to programming the airbag module to recognise the new bags... that is if i go for it... also, i noticed that S265 - RDC is prewired as well... interesting, i did not know that a few years back when i was fighting to retrofit the RDC into the 4.6iS... oh well...
again, good luck... |
Thank you and good luck to you to. You know I'm kinda surprised this has been such a closed thread I guess you would say. Its only been the few of us talking. I thought more people might join in with as many people as there is on here.

Speaking of jobs. I don't mean to impose but what do you do? Ive never seen anyone with so many amazing BMW's.
|
i am researching other things for the X, as I am trying to figure out, how i can have the sunroof close under the rain, if i am stupid enough to leave the roof open and walk away... still leaves the question about the windows...
yours came as a side project, that was rather easy retrofittable... a lot of folks on the east coast are dealing with Sandy... others have life and are out partying... i got the kids tucked in the bed, and just chilling in front of the computers... Mike, when is that dinner in MD? did it already happen? i just remembered about it, need to search for the post... |
you are asking pno? or me? i just got my head cracked on beemers - I had E34 (my wife's very first car, 3.0L V-8, 530i), I used to have E39, still in love with that design, then E53 4.6iS that I hauled around the world until it died on me, and now 4.8is... my sis-in-law had E36 coupe, my cousing used to have E53 3.0... all black!!! hahaha... now i am looking for an E90 for my wife...

well.. i am on uncle sam's paygrade system too... getting a brand new one at $75K? hell no!!! i got all of them used... just instead of buying a brand new Kia and drive in a Kia, I spent the money on a used bimmer and arrive in class... more than that - fun to drive, i actually look forward to trips on the road... i had taken my 4.6 to 140 MPH - scary!!!! 4.8 is a baby in comparasion to the older brother - the old one has a few battle scars from being shipped around... lol...
but, since these cars sometimes are tempting to be driven hard, some parts are not holding up - before going for a repair to a shop or something, log in to this site and see if someone already repaired it - like the window regulators... there is a $2 plastic part that breaks over time, but if you keep rolling it up and down in hopes that it will start working, then you need to replace the whole regulator... more money... lol... |

there are a few online people that we deal with - the ECS is the board sponsor, there is Pelican Parts, KO Performance, BavAuto just to name few... for the part numbers i suggest using RealOEM.com - you punch in your last 7 of VIN, and then go through the categories to see the parts... also, there is bmw-planet.com, with electrical schematics, and also bmw TIS (i don't remember site's URL) with repair instructions... a lot of us have factory PDFs with retrofit info... also, check sister sites, a lot of things are same between the cars...
well... welcome aboard... hopefully you will enjoy your ride... |
Ok thanks again for everything. I do enjoy it a lot so far. Its crazy how people get jealous to when you buy a nice car. I hope it lasts me for many years to come.

Hey man welcome on board. I have read all things you guys were saying and decided to say that for mods go with: angel eyes, fog lights to much hids, tint the windows, change interior lights to led, led tail lights, #1 thing buy running boards wont regret it, plasti-dip the grills and rims might be a good combo. Keep in mind. All this things i listed you could get away with only $1000 or less isnt that crazy only the running boards are costy 300-500

Im not to sure. I was just going to try and do the cheapest things first. But I really want to either put the stock subs back in or upgrade one or the other. I really want an exhaust, the front and rear cameras and the rear heated seats. But since changing the lights is so inexpensive that may be my first upgrade.
|
Plasti-Dip, 2 cans, about $10-15 from home depot - you don't even have to take the wheels off the car (but have to be careful, or, just take them off, one at a time)... clean up the wheels, mask off the fenders, spray away... a couple of coats...
instantly, black rims... take a picture before and after... do one side first, say, left side... take a look... if you like it, do the other side... if not, just peel it off, and return the second can back... |

heres my old rims..Painted Gunmetal Color...
|
I guess painting them black would help cover up where the person who owned it before me ding up the rims hitting curbs. How long does that stuff last
|
i painted mine in mid august - after several washes still there...
|
How long does it take to dry? And is there any certain weather conditions? I may be able to paint my tomorrow or tuesday as long as cold weather isn't an issue and it dries fast enough to where I will be able to drive places.

yup.... |
it is a spray - you don't want dust, bugs, leaves sticking to wet paint... it will take about 10 minutes to get dry, and about couple hours to completely set... do couple coats - once first dries up, go for the second...
|
Oh ok so its an all day event pretty much then.

Hey pnoyako85 did you use plasit dip on your emblems to or did you just buy them blacked out?
|
i got mine on ebay, i got the ones for the wheels, the valve caps, the front and the back, all blacked out... also got one for steering wheel, but have not figured out how to get that one installed yet...
|
Oh ok. I was thinking about plasti diping my emblems first cause its a smaller job and it would let me see exactly how it looks as well as giving me some practice with dipping.

the blacked outt emblems were very good looking that the whole service dept at Euro Cars dealer in costa rica was checking my car out as they never had seen those on a bmw... the one from ebay, chinese, are done ok, under a clearcoat.. if you dip them, you will get the look, but not the feel - good to gauge if you like it or not... you may try to search for emblems in your car's color....
|
have him run either of my VINs - LN78208 and LE83922.. both have rear heated seats from the factory... he is less than knowledgable... hahahaha
|
you will need to give him your interior code, so he can match it to your car... otherwise you will end up with black seats on a white interior!!! or vice versa...
|
Ok when I call back I will talk to someone else and if they say the same thing I will give them yours. Is the color code specific or can I just tell him I have grey interior?

|
I think they would look good. What color do you have now? Where your blacked out emblems on your other one?
|
Unclebuck that looks great, great job, and terminator black would look great to it gives it a phantom look.
Here are some other quick and inexpensive mods http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/14/evu5yhe3.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/14/gu8y3y9e.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/14/u6upares.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/14/9uneheve.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/14/4uzypena.jpg Sent from my iPhone |
the steering wheel, cesar... is the original emblem secured by plastic tabs on 3 and 9 o'clock? i have done all of those black outs, including the wheels center caps, the front and the back and also the valve stem caps in black but could not remove the original steering wheel emblem...

I did not remove the steering wheel emblem I used 3M vinyl to cover the blue.😃

Thank you. Those are going to be the next thing I do probably. Since its cheap. I just wanted to see what the black would look like before I went out and bought the emblems. They look really good on yours!
|
What exactly is a face lifted X5. I keep seeing people talking about it but I have no idea what it is.
|
BMWs model lifespan is about 7 years from introduction of mass production to the end of it... somewhere in the middle of the 7 year span, the factory updates the look by changing shape of lights, tails, some minor things.. it is called Life Cycle Impulse , LCI... for the X5, it happened in MY 2004, when a new V-8 was introduced, the N62 in place of M62 (M62 has been in the BMW line up since early-mid 90-s, which itself got its own revisions from no VANOS to single VANOS to double VANOS).
instead of calling these models LCI folks just call them facelifted, i guess reference to a plastic surgeon lifting up old face to make it look young!!! |
yea Terminator mine is black and I have everything blackout out. Even the chrome surround for the rear roundel. All with dip. Came out real good
|
Dark, you got pics posted somewhere , we could take a look at your "black edition"? I have wheels' center caps blacked out, the valve stem caps blacked out, I did not yet black out the front and rear emblems on 4.8 (they are blacked out on the 4.6), and did not do the steering wheel... I just realized, there is also a color emblem on the engine cover on the N62 motor... it'd be cool to black it out too, just to be consistent... I was wondering if the center push button on the keyfob could be blacked out as well... Then, it would really be, a "Black Edition"... lol...

just like mine, mine as well is an 06 4.4 but lots of mods on it interior and exterior AE's LED tail lights fog lights 8000K running boards tint the windows and we shall compare then :) good lucking X tho matches your exterior color all blacked out :) |
Looks like you're off to a good start so far! Cant wait to see the progression.
Just a heads up though, on the previous page your hood isn't latched properly on the passenger side....adjusting the stops will clean up the lines and get rid of the gap over the headlamp. :) |
Oh dang I didn't even realize that. Thank you X5SND. How do I adjust the stops?
|
Before u start playing around with them, open the hood and confirm the latch is functioning....open the hood and get someone to pull the hood release from inside. You should see it sliding when they pull. If all looks good, on the hood on either side of the grills, you'll see the spring/plunger that locks the hood. Its the threaded rod has a torx at the end. Turn this to adjust the overall length of the rod, and turn the collar at the end of the spring to lock the rod (and adjust the preload on the hood). It may take some trial and error to get it to sit right, and you may also have to play with with bump stops up by the firewall to get the hood sitting even across the length of the fender.
