At what mileage should I replace the transmission oil cooler as a preventive action and what should the tech be attentive for when doing such replacement. Might he issue a leakage problem for not doing properly the replacement?

No one got an answer? no one of you faced such challenge?

Honestly I've never heard of transmission oil cooler as a maintainance item.
My motto is, If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I think it is an oil reservoir or a shaft,where the transmission oil passes through it and is surrounded by the engine cooling water. If it just leak, you'll get water in the tranny and the tranny is overheated and destroyed in a matter of mins. It is famous here in my country whenever purchasing a used car to replace that cooler as a highly important safety measure. is it called something else?

First of all, the part is $250 here in the US, (who knows, probably much more by the time it gets to you in Lebanon). It is a heat exchanger, a bit different than a typical radiator. Plus the labor to change.

The X5's have a long list of know weak points....that's not one of them.

So before you asking us about preventive maintenence, tell us the model of X5 you have, the year and the mileage, (best to put that info into your signature). Also, do you know the service history of the car?

Hey Skyline. You can read my signature , it is already there and it mention the model, mileage and tranny type. In Lebanon it cost you 220$ with a 50$ labor charge. Yess I do know the vehicle history, it has a clean car fax till the import year (2012) and it came from North Carolina). No mechanical repairs just the usual maintenance.

The cooler is not prone to failure. I would not replace it as a scheduled preventative maintenance item. I would check around it for leaks.

Other vehicles that pass coolant into the transmission often have a transmission cooler loop installed in the radiator. This one is a separate heat exchanger, with oil on one side, and treated coolant on the other side. As long as the proper coolant is used, it should last much longer.
