Garage door opener range is now very limited

It has been ages since I started a thread here :D

04 4.4 with integrated garage door opener (Premium Package?).

I've noticed over the last few years that the range of my garage door opener has decreased considerably. I used to be able to open the door from the street. That is about 120' away from the garage. Now, I need to be within about 15' of the garage for it to open.

This problem isn't particular to the X5. The remotes that came with the opener exhibit the same problem. I did some googling but didn't find much information.

Suggestions were:

- Try checking codes (it's the old style single code Genie 1/2 HP screw drive). Done.

- Try cycling the power on the opener. Done.

- Check the antenna and try repositioning it. Done.

- Could be interference from Wi-Fi networks. I didn't find the frequencies listed but that could be the issue. There are more hotspots than there used to be and more may be dual band than a few years ago.

Anyone here have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have the same problem. I use to be able to open the door from the end of the cul-de-sac. Now I have to be in front of my driveway. Same for both cars. I've been meaning to try the old remotes that came with the openers but haven't gotten around to it.

WiFi operates in the GHz range whereas openers are typically in the 100-400 MHz range. It's possible that a poorly designed WiFi router could be noisy in the 100-400 MHz range.

There's no way to pinpoint the problem unless there is only one source of the interference and you happened to own it. Otherwise it would take some expensive spectrum analyser equipment to locate all the sources of 100-400 MHz transmissions in your neighborhood.

Thanks for confirming my observation, rayxi. It's a bit of a pain but I guess I'll just have to live with it :/

Have you by any chance installed a LED light near or around your garage?

Huh....what about LED bulbs in the halos??

Nonot 12-12-2012 10:17 PM

No, I was refering to the new LED bulbs used in your home. I experienced this interferance when I replaced my normal incandecent household bulb in my garage with the newer energy efficient LED bulb. I took it out immediately and garage remote worked normally

Interesting. So you only noticed this a night or are the bulbs on during the day? I experience the problem during the day when the LEDs I have in the house are off.

The problem device(s) may not be in your house. That's what I meant when I said it will be hard to isolate the source(s).

I've also heard that LED lighting can cause problems. Not surprising considering the direct replacement LED bulbs have to cram a transformer circuit in a very small package. Probably not much wiggle room for including RF noise reduction.

Good point, rayxi. Since I drive about once or twice a week on average, it's not a big deal. I was mostly curious if anybody else had seen this since googling didn't turn up much. I appreciate your input :)

That's really very true haigha!! Taking about me a few months back when i was in a search of a new garage door opener!! Then people at that time seems to be like that only as you said!! But i finally decided to install an automatic one so that i would be very helpful for me to open and close the door!!
