Back up camera

Hey guys, I know this topic has been covered a lot, but I haven't seen anybody try install this type of camera below.

NEW SONY CCD Car Rear View Reverse Backup CAMERA For BMW X5 / BMW X3 BMW X6 | eBay

or

BMW X5 Car Backup Parking Reverse Reversing Security Rear View Camera | eBay

I bought a dynavin unit, and want to have a backup camera installed as well when I install the dynavin, but I have no idea which back up camera to get. I know most of you have the backup camera that fits in the license plate lights, but I'm rdash license plate lights so I don't want to have 2 different colour license plate lights.

Any insights on the cameras would be of tremendous help!

TerminatorX5 12-22-2012 02:01 PM

both of the cameras in your link will require you to DRILL your car!!!!! I would not drill the $50-$75K car to fit $20 camera.

The license plate cameras that they sell on ebay does not fit directly to the light opening, but you can modify the camera and then it will fit... i have some pictures somewhere on this forum where i have modified the camera and then it fit just fine... once i find it, i will post a link, unless you will find it before me...

patrickkc 12-22-2012 02:10 PM

Hey terminator, thanks for the quick response! Yes, I've read your thread before while doing research on the back up cameras. The only reason I don't want to go with the license plate ones is the 2 different colours I will get from my license plate lights. That will bother the heck out of me for sure.

I looked at the OEM cameras and it seems like it's kind of the same design, so if I had it with OEM camera, I would need drilling too? I figured if I'm gonna be cutting up my dash to install the Dynavin, might as well try to get an OEM looking camera?

btw, how is your camera holding up?

SlickGT1 12-22-2012 02:29 PM

Pat, I'm with you. Even though I will keep my stock nav, I don't want that plate cam. You also don't really need to drill anything crazy. I plan on passing the wire by where the latch is, or the plastic right next to it.

SlickGT1 12-22-2012 02:30 PM

Those cams do look like they will need a serious hole. I will look for one that I like, mounting wise.

TerminatorX5 12-22-2012 02:34 PM

surprisingly, i am pleased with appearance of license plate lite camera. it looks like it belongs there. night performance sucks, i've used bettter cameras before. the light from LED is clearly different, can be rectified by a second light swapped for another LED light and programming cold monitoring off. no cutting of anything, and is fully reversible.i would recommend license plate camera (once it is modified as per other thread)

patrickkc 12-22-2012 02:37 PM

thanks for all the tips. I will look into it some more! I'm really trying to go for the OEM look like the cams found on the e70s. I found somebody had retrofitted it on their E70 and this is the look im trying to aim for.

Night view, I have read so many reviews saying the cameras suck on ebay. I have super bright reverse lights on my X, so I'm hoping they will help out in the dark.

SlickGT1 12-22-2012 02:39 PM

I'm going to get this sucker. Once its in my hands, I will figure our a proper location.

Waterproof Night Vision Car Color Rear View 170° Angle Reverse Backup Camera JT8 | eBay

patrickkc 12-22-2012 02:45 PM

that camera looks like you won't need to drill such a bit hole! probably just a small one to feed the cable through it. I had a friend that recently got a backup camera for his Mercedes C-class, and he said it is on par with the OEM camera that comes with the car. He got it off from some China website and it's apparently "HD". The newest generation of backup cameras. I'm gonna see him tonight and will take a look at his backup camera and ask more information about it.

here are some pics of the license plate light camera... let me know if the pics are sufficient or if you want more pics - i can just step outside and snap away!!! lol...

shiny!!!!
i like the design of this camera... i might consider it - considering that the previous install is reversible ;);););)

patrickkc 12-22-2012 03:26 PM

wow that one does look very OEM terminator! do you have any night shots of the license plate lights?

TerminatorX5 12-22-2012 03:48 PM

i will do some night shots tonight... as a matter of fact, i have the LED on the camera side and the OE on the other side, looks weird... I also have the Check License Plate Light warning in the dash - never got around to turn off the cold monitoring... I consider those two issues easily resolvable and will get to them once i get off my lazy butt... lol... ebay has a lot of LED license plate light for sale and i will be considering the 2-LED versions as the camera side has 2 LEDs.

patrickkc 12-22-2012 04:09 PM

thanks!

Also, I was looking at this one on ebay,

700T Wired Car HD Reversing Backup System Rear View Mirror Camera Components | eBay

I'm assuming those leds around the lens are infrared for the night vision? or else it's going to look ridiculous if I throw it in reverse and a ring of leds light up my backup camera.. haha

TerminatorX5 12-22-2012 04:19 PM

The consumer cameras with the IR LEDs to light up the camera view at night is a nice gimmick used by the sales people...

It is much better to get a camera with the lowest rated LUX rating (lowest as in smallest number of lux, like 0.1 or 0.05), as opposed to camera that has the LED for the infra red lighting... those IR LEDS are not powerful enough to light up anything...

Take it from me, I do do things for living (i work for US gov-t), and that includes cameras.

the camera in that link looks like the bumble bee camera but a bit bigger - in that case the bumblebee camera is much better - i had it for many years on my 4.6 until I came across the license plate camera for the 4.8... As a matter of fact the bumblebee camera had better night performance than the license plate camera...

this camera has 1.5 lux rating, the shiny camera from slick's link has 0.1 lux - the slick's camera is much better...

patrickkc 12-22-2012 04:21 PM

thanks again Terminator! huge help!! I really know nothing about these backup cameras at all. I'm just looking for keywords, HD & Night Vision. :D Now I will look at the LUX rating as well

TerminatorX5 12-22-2012 04:28 PM

the one that i bought is from this guy Wireless Car CCD Rear View Camera for BMW 1 3 5 x3 x5 x6 E39 E53 E46 E82 E88 M3 | eBay

i just checked out his lux - it says, less than 0.5...

night picture is crappy...

so, i might get another one, with better rating - thank God, i did not drill anything, so i can experiment with different cameras!!! lol... it is very low on my priority list, to be honest - the camera works, and when i have nothing better to do, i might venture into it again...

SlickGT1 12-22-2012 09:20 PM

Term, so did you wire it to the PDC, or reverse light?

TerminatorX5 12-22-2012 09:47 PM

Wired it to PDC, pins 7 for the signal and I think pin 6 for ground... I will do a write up, as i did take a lot of pictures, including the soldering of wires and whatnot...

Once I do the write up, I will post to one of the reverse camera threads that spawn on this forum, like there is no tomorrow!!!! hahaha

camera comes on as the gear goes to reverse, stays on while i back up, and stays on for a bit longer as i drive forward and then flips off, as the PDC shuts off at certain speed forward...

my kids are having blast turning the camera on manually and making faces into the camera when i am parked with engine running...

SlickGT1 12-22-2012 10:15 PM

Lol, when do you plan this writeup? Hopefully soon. I'm just a camera away from finishing this epic Journey of parts. Lol

here are some shots at night... eventully i will get somethinglike this, White Canbus Error Free LED License Plate Lights 6418 C5W 36mm Festoon Tag D7 | eBay, to match the other light.

patrickkc 12-23-2012 03:57 AM

nice Terminator! thanks for the pics! The difference between the license plate lights I have now and the ones you have shown will be too great I believe. I know many members have changed out to LEDs instead of whole housing changes. When I first joined the forum last year, I asked if anybody had changed the LED housing instead of the bulbs but nobody seemed to have done it! so I actually may be one of the first ones to have a super bright license plate lights. I'll take a picture and show you guys tomorrow..

I checked out my friend's backup camera tonight, holy crap was it clear! it actually looks like OEM cameras! so I will order from China and will post results as soon as I get everything installed!

SlickGT1 12-23-2012 10:32 AM

I have had LED license plate lights for over a year now. But I just recently coded them for LED. So far all good.

Term, where is the display picture?

TerminatorX5 12-23-2012 12:18 PM

display - as in the reverse image? I will take some pics and will post them - the daytime picture is good... the night time - sucks... I will get all of those and post them...

TerminatorX5 12-25-2012 02:43 PM

Hi guys.

I have come up with a write-up on the rear camera installation on E53, the file is PDF, about 13Mb... since this is a work in progress, I would like to hear comments about removing some content or adding more content to the file.

If you care for the file, shoot me an email at

terminatorx5 at midnightstar dot com

and i will send you the file. Don't use PM, my box is full. In return, I expect to hear constructive criticism and ideas on improving the document - since I did the work and then wrote it, many things seem obvious to me but might be unknown to you.
I am posting this info on other rearview camera threads that I subscribed to.

EDIT: reduced the size of PDF to 2Mb

TerminatorX5 12-27-2012 03:55 PM

anymore takers of the file for review?

patrickkc 12-27-2012 09:42 PM

I am on vacation right now, and will look at it when I am back home. Thanks Terminator for the help and contribution! I'll also show you guys how my camera looks like when I have it all installed and set up!

X5 E53 Backup Camera

Thanks for all the info on backup cameras. I am looking to install a rear camera as well. I received one with my headunit which "was" supposed to be a OEM light fit, however it wast too thick. I saw some others on ebay as well and wondered what yall ended up with? Plus if you have instructions I can review that would be great. I still have my truck taking apart and want to make sure I have not forgotten anything.

I did receive a light error up front but I think it is due some wiring problems I am having since I had to modify the handle to get the light into it. (I wont do that again, and I have ordered a new one just in case I screwed things up to badly). I also have noticed the electronic handle lib release it not working either. I think it has something to do with the wiring I unplugged or cut from the handle. I am not sure what the 4 pin wire connectors are exactly for. So I guessed (only within the handle since I ordered a new one anyway. The lights work but the handle does not seem to operate to release the upper lid. I will have to check again today since I was up late working on it.

Terminator where did you buy your set up from? does it workwith the factory nav?

TerminatorX5 01-03-2013 11:07 AM

bought it on the ebay, connected to the factory nav. i have factory TV module that has rear camera input.

TerminatorX5 03-01-2013 01:50 AM

patric, how is your camera install?

Hey, received the camera last week, but haven't installed it yet. Will probably get it installed this week and write some review on everything I've had install over the past month. (dynavin, JL audio sub + amp) :D

patrickkc 03-19-2013 02:05 AM

Finally got everything set up in the car. Here is a quick picture of it at night, in a very dark parking lot. I need to play around with the brightness/contrast for my Dynavin unit, and it looks much better now instead of looking like black and white.

One problem I don't really like is that the load time takes too long. From the time I put it in reverse and for the camera to come on is probably a good 5 seconds. If I didn't wait, by the time the camera screen comes up, I would've been out of the parking spot already.

I will have more photos later this week, and a video showing the time it takes when put in reverse.

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/7528/img5251h.jpg

TerminatorX5 03-19-2013 06:20 AM

Congrats on the install!!!!

where is that delay coming from? the camera? the screen unit is warming up too long? the relay? where is the relay connected to?

patrickkc 03-19-2013 01:23 PM

Thanks Terminator!

I would believe the delay is coming from the Dynavin unit itself. 1. the warm up/load time for the Dynavin unit takes like 15 secs. 2. If I'm listening to music, and I throw the car in reverse, it takes around 5-10 seconds before the camera screen comes up. It basically has to "close" my music app, and open another camera app. I'll have a video, as it's hard to explain in words really..

There are some small problems with the Dynavin unit, probably just not enough R&D, that drive me crazy. But those shall be for another thread.

Honestly, I don't have a glue where the relay is connected to. I watched my friend do it, but how exactly the 4 prong relay was set up, I haven't got the slightest clue.

TerminatorX5 03-19-2013 09:15 PM

in my case, the factory TV tuner takes over the screen, even if the Nav has not fully booted up - once i throw the gear in R, the screen flips into the reverse image... since i used a wireless transmitter / receiver, i get wireless interference from the headlight system and from other external sources (plenty of those sources around Pentagon!!!)... i will run an actual wire someday - if the interference gets under my skin - i am ok for the time being...
next time i dig into TV setup when I wil l run the AV wires to the factory locations in the rear center console... sometime in the summer...
