Has anybody painted their interior wood trim?
 

Just saw the thread regarding cracked interior wood trim. I've got my drivers side door piece cracking and was considering pulling all the pieces and painting them piano black. I'm not interested in the vinyl wrapping concept. Has anybody done this?

You would have to figure out something to stop/prevent future cracking. Doubt just paint would spy old up long. I'd be interested in a solution though, my drivers door is cracking as well!

Seen it done.Only twice. if you do a search for (painted wood trim) or (painted interior) you might be able to find a thread about a guy who painted his trim all black. As for the second guy he modified his trim and put cloth on it. No DIY on it or thread because both him and the painter kind of got bashed by most members on it for destroying perfectly good trim( the cloth guy did manage to get a few likes if i remember right)

My E39 M5 came with two cracked wood trim pieces. I originally had them wrapped in 3M Brushed Aluminum style finish but after about about a year I noticed the edges getting loose so I eventually just peeled it all off and had them painted. My painter said he had to sand each of those pieces and then use a flex filler.

The X5 looks to have the same exact type of wood trim. I made a thread about this because I was looking at a 4.8iS for purchase that had the center console cracked. I didn't end up buying it but my little brother now has a 4.4i and so does a close buddy of mine. My brother's car is at the shop for a bunch of goodies. In a few weeks it should be out of there and I'll take some pictures of the finished product in his car.

I have done this in my E39, went from wood, to a brushed aluminum look. Turned out well. My trim also had cracking in it so I used a little car audio trick we use when working with abs. I took CA glue, baking soda and CA activator. I sanded the area's that were cracked, to open them up a little bit, applied the CA glue, sprinkled the soda into it and hit it with the activator. It actually creates a fill thats sandable as well as a little flexable. You will have to sand down smooth, then paint over as desired. I applied a couple coats of plasti-dip to get an even texture, then painted over with the aluminum paint.

I believe I've seen a couple ebay X's with some flashy red painted trim.

Just re-finish the wood? Might be slightly over the top, but the work they do is spectacular. Top notch quality. Custom veneers are available too. IMO, it would be more 'fun' to get a custom veneer as opposed to paint.
