What condition addlows to get the most tranny oil into you tranny.
 

I replaced my tranny oil a year ago (but I have not drive it since). I was always afraid I did not get enough oil into the Tranny. Because I recover almost 5 quarts of oil but I cannot even get 4 quarts back in. I want to add a little more.

As you all know the bmw did not have a tranny dip stick or dip stick hold. And on mine tranny I don't even have a side tranny fill plug. I have a big nut (not the drain plug) at the bottom of my tranny pan (you folks told me that is the fill plug). When it start to dribble it is the right level assuming right temp engine running.

So how do I get more oil in. Should I have it running hotter then normal temp. Running cold. Have it tilted up front tilted up back?

Is there also an alternative way to add tranny oil. Can I add it through the tranny cooler?

Anyone have any ideas?

I thought the procedure was to:
1. Fill fluid until it dribble out.
2. Replace fill bolt.
3. Start engine with A/C on.
4. Go through the gears a few times.
5. Add fluid again until it dribble out.
6. Replace fill bolt.
7. Done.

You probably didn't do steps 3 through 7?

I did do all the steps. Any other ideas?

Instead of #5, at that point you monitor the temperature. If it is in the right range, you don't want any more fluid than that.

Should be cold since ATF expand with heat. If it get past 30C let it cool down. Just remember that in addition to the ATF in the pan the torque converter hold almost the same amount, so you should let the car sit over night so that the ATF in the TC will also cool down.

Because of the way the 6HP26X fill plug is designed, it is difficult to fill it. I recommend the following tool to fill all BMW transmissions.

You can use an electric drill, or impact to operate this pump.


Start car cold, remove fill plug, fill with transmission fluid until it starts to come out. Re-install plug, and tighten.

I thought puttin the oil cool was a good idea. But when I tried that it was dripping oil out. So I can't even get the same amount of oil I got in when I changed the oil.

Any more ideas. Can I tried putting the oil in through the oil cooler line. Any one have any thoughts on this or have done it before. Thanks

Why would you want to overfill your transmission?

Have you considered it was over-filled initially?

The transmission is overfilled initially from the factory. It is overfilled to compensate for the oil cooler lines. Exchange transmissions are also overfilled on purpose.
