Tailgate Electric lock malfunction

So the x5 was in the garage yesterday to have all my goodies installed. Dynavin + JL audio sub/amp. Got a call from the garage telling me that the tailgate electric lock has malfunctioned. They said the tailgate opened, but can't be closed now. I tried looking for this issue, but haven't found something quite as similar as mine. I have noticed recently though, that when I open the tailgate, the 2 interior lights on the tailgate flicker. (like power is not constantly getting to the lights)

I'm being charged $650 to replace the electric lock, was just wondering if this sounds fishy?

Thanks Patrick:D

strange, they work in trunk, and then the tailgate lock is not working? tell them to put it off, and look at it yourself - not like there is too much labor involved, just pull the trim off and replace the part...

take a look for yourself - $650 is a lot of dough for something that you are not sure, if broken or not...

it could be just stuck in "closed" position while the gate is "open"

Which lock is not latching? The hatch with the glass or the bottom gate?

I had the same issue with the latch on the glass. Ordered the part (new) on ebay for $151.00 and it took me < 20 minutes to swap out.

I will call them back and find out more info. I've always trusted this shop and has close relationship with them, so I don't think they will scam me. But it is such a coincidence that they were working at the back and my lock suddenly malfunctions.

They said my trunk cannot be closed, not sure which part. I am out of town until Friday, so I cannot go inspect the car.

would you have the part # for that part? :wow: $151!!?? I was told $600ish, and he's not charging me labor to install the part already.

In order for forum members to give you the correct part nbrs...you need to create a signature that includes your X's model/model year/build date or last 7 digits of your VIN.

There are multiple models, engines, transmissions, and changes during the production run from 1999-2006...and just giving out BMW part nbrs without having the correct information could lead to you possibly buying the wrong part.

Help us help you better by creating a signature that includes some details about which X you have and when it was built (model year/build date) etc. :)

For example, the top trunk lid lock is different based on build date (I think somewhere around late 2003)...so check any of the part databases like realoem.com or bmwfans.info to make sure you order the correct part for your X.

You are absolutely right! and I always forget to update my signature. I'll be doing it right now before I forget again! ;)

Thanks.

See #15 in the diagram below and at this link to the part nbr database for the upper lift gate:

And here's the link for #6 if the issue is in the lower tail gate:
