Nav Update Discs?

How much do they normally cost from the dealer?

UCrewX5 01-08-2006 11:35 AM

Dealers generally don't stock them, you have to order them directly at http://navteq.com

Tomaz 01-08-2006 12:50 PM

My updated disc was about $165.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. If everybody did this, then the mapping companies would simply increase costs to people like me who buy original disks. If you can afford an X5, I`m sure you can afford a nav disk to get you around.

Worse than dodgy. :captainob It is theft :chair:.

Tomaz 01-08-2006 09:24 PM

Right! I believe it's copyright laws. If it's the same fine as the FBI warning I am forced to watch every time I load a DVD that would be $250,000 fine and up to 5 years in jail.

dzhoka, it looks like the $165.00 for a new nav disc is the better deal :D

It is possible to make a backup of the navigation disc using a computer. I did.

You know what would be cool? Automatically updating navigation systems. Just throw in a cheap 40gig harddrive in a car (you could throw in four or five of them to be redundant) and have it download everytime you went in for server. Put wi-fi in the car and then you could download from other BMW's as well.. :D

Hi Ricky, Unless you have an agreement with the providers of the navigation software, its stealing. Truth is, they are not building new roads so quickly that a semi-annual update is not sufficient.

dzhoka 01-08-2006 10:54 PM

well at least/last....updates could be given for free...because all of us paid for previ-s version as well as u did before ets...
thanks anyway sound of 165.00 really comphy

I have bought the 2005-2 disc as well. I have two paid for navigation discs and two copies. I use the copies (actually only the latest copy) and keep the orignal in my bookshelf above me.

Same with all the CD's I buy and what not, I keep the originals away from wear and tear.

BTW: They are building roads fairly quickly where I live, semi annual is almost too long for me :D I am waiting for the 2006 DVD to come out but so far I haven't recieved a response.

I did exactly the same, bought latest HIGH nav disk with TMC and simply copied it. I do this just incase it gets borrowed if it ever has to go to the garage etc. So long as I still have the original to prove it`s mine, I`m fine with it.

I've taught many of my friends to do the same thing.
It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I also copy all console games to their harddrives. That is.. Xbox games go on the xbox harddrive and PS2 games to the PS2 harddrive. I've read too many stories of Xbox drives EATING the cds and same with PS2.

Do you or anyone else know or have tried to use a DVD-RW (Rewritable) instead of a simple DVD-R ? Or the general question is: from the four main types (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW), which ones are supported in each player (e.g. E90/E87/E83 professional navi, with DVD in front, and E46/E83 business navi with DVD on the back)

I've made a copy to a DVD-RW of a professional navi DVD from the 320 they borrowed me, and this weekend I've tried to load it in the borrowed X3, and a friends E46 3 series and a 5 series.

The X3 with business navi said "No disc".
The E46 3 series with professional navi said "Invalid disc"

I guess they are both not able to read RW's.

The 5 series (with iDrive) and professional navi said "Newest disc detected, please shutdown your system for five minutes" !!!
After ten! minutes with the car off and locked (we went for a snack), the navi booted, the DVD was being read, but then we got a "DVD error". Now I don't know if the 5 series also doesn't read RW's, or if the RW was bad.

The idea is to grab the DVD from the X3 we'll receive in August, and mangle it to add our own POI's (e.g. Geocaching.com), but we would like to test it first with RW's.

In Europe (Belgium), we have to pay 228 euro for an new DVD map disk (2006version). To be honest, I wonder why we have to pay this ? We paid for it the first time, didn't we ? Or am I missing the clue here?

john348 06-06-2006 04:38 AM

I asked at the garage about a new disc but was told at the price they sell it for it isn't worth buying? A bit honest for a dealer what!

Especially when it is just a few roads and information. I can understand paying full price for a new installation but why full price for an upgrade. Most companies in the world offer an upgrade price vs a new price (even MS sometimes?) TomTom does and is downloadable and has cameras and audible warnings on POIs and has full post code search AND charges less for an upgrade?

John
