X5 woes
i know i havnt posted much but thought i would give an update about my X5
this all happened in a 6 week period; first i come outside and find a big puddle of coolant on the driveway, Valley pan gasket which ended up costing me $1000 then 2 weeks later the main bearing that holds the guts of the transmission let go totally killing my tranny, a used tranny and $3000 later and im up and running again. THEN this; just got back from the shop and they had it pretty torn down, the timing chain guide is supposed to have a UHMW guide to keep the chain from slapping around but it disintegrated and is now non existent, The U-shaped piece is whats supposed to have it attached. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8099/8...976bc80d_z.jpg you can also see the pilot valves that move the intake cams for the variable valve timing which is what i originally thought the problem was. Here are a few shots of the engine torn down, pretty fancy looking engine IMO. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8532/8...5dae380b_z.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8517/8...05afbbe5_z.jpg and here is the head, you can't see it in the pic but a bunch of valves are bent due to the slip in timing when the guide let go, both heads are coming off for a total Re and Re. the pistons and bores are in great shape so the bottom end isnt being touched. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8527/8...b84c1dae_z.jpg uhg.... $7000 in 6 weeks. |
Wow, that is some really bad luck. You hit the 2 major problems on the V8 X5s... trans and timing chain guides.
You will be home free now.... |
thats what im thinking, i was thinking of selling it but it wouldnt be worth it with all this work. should run very well now. just hard on the credit cards lol.

That's unfortunate....but on the bright side she should run like clockwork now!!

got it back from the shop, still can't believe i walked out of a shop with a low milage trans (60k) and had the entire top end of the engine rebiult and it was under $7000CDN.
runs like a hot damn and corrected some issues i was having earlier, no more hesitation at low load on the highway, no funny rattle at startup, tons of power and got back a little fuel economy. i was planning on selling it but i just cant justify that now. now to make it pretty again, the winter has been hard on it. thinking im going to pick up some new rims, maybe something in satin black that doesnt show the brake dust quite so badly, the OEM rims i have are in rough shape and the coating is flaking off... might look into getting them powdercoated. now that the engine runs well i want to do the exhaust next. does anyone know a canadian retailer that sells the resonater delete x-pipe kit? or is it a custom jobby? does the 4.6is muffle bolt into where the current one is? |
