01 4.4 questions

hi folks, new here. just bought my first x sat and must say its very different from the lowered, modded 3 series i am used to but i am loving it. had a couple questions though, i have already ordered trans fluid and filter as well as t-case fluid as it is almost at 100k. i was curious though does anyone offer trans tuning for them like they do for the e39's? or has anyone run an aftermarket valve body to help the trans last longer? I have experience in diesel truck using a good vb and tc to make a stock trans handle way more than it ever should. Also my x has navigation but has the 2001 disc in it. Can i still get updated discs? or does it also need a software update or am i just out of luck? Where i live the old disc is worthless lol. thanks for helping a newb!!

at this mileage and the age of the truck, i would not even touch the tranny, unless it gives you headache...

what version firmware do you have in your nav? from main menu got to settings and look at the top right corner. it will have a number, like 4-1/30 or something like that...

oh, and welcome to the board!!! where are the pics of the ride?

ive not had a chance to check the firmware yet. ill do that. i need to take some pics and get em up lol. main reason i want to do the tranny is it is working and shifting so great, want to keep it that way. ive been into autos way too many times lol want to keep from doin it to this one. see your in harrisburg, ill be pulling up there at the farm so complex next month. thanks for the welcome!

one more thing, where can i get a front license plate bracket? pa car and im in va lol dont work. and what the most common cause of driver side air leaking off in rear susp?

TerminatorX5 02-26-2013 10:31 PM

air leaks due to airbag, check Arnott, he comes highly recommended, and is a sponsor of this forum...
are you changing registration from PA to VA? you know you will be slapped with semiannual tax bill based on your car's value, as opposed to flat $36...

read up on this forum about disasters that had happened after the tranny flush - if it was not flushed around 25-30K, then - farghet abou' it...

I am most of the times in VA, my mom lives in Hbg, and lived there for good 15 years... where in VA is verona? sounds like california (and i know, it is not the italian verona!!!)

def used to the taxes lol. yea no flush just filter change, i research here alot before buying. actually just found arnott's a few min ago, it rides fine but leaks pretty quick after cuting off.
Verona is just south of harrisonburg on i-81. about 2.5hrs from stafford, there was actually an x there i was gonna look about at car mart but sold thursday.

dealer around the corner from me, 15 minutes walking, had X5s on his lot, both black... i did not stop to take a look, i am not on a market at this moment... i will be looking to replace my wife's 2011 335 this summer... now she wants an M3 - i am not sure if she can handle the car... she is driving ok, she drove in many countries with crazy traffic, i am afraid, after the M3 i will not be able to satisfy her!!!!

I would just go to one of the online part databases (like www.realoem.com) and look up the 11 digit BMW part nbr for the front plate holder...then type "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx" (where x = the bmw part nbrs) into a google or bing search box. You should get a whole bunch of vendors (BMW dealers and online vendors) that sell what you need. Although, the dealer may be the easiest and have the hardware that you need as well to mount the plate holder.

Example, the plate holder for US plates, is #13 in the diagram below from realoem...and the hardware needed are the encircled numbers in the diagram...which are also illustrated within the diagram (#14, #15, #16, #17):

Ok ill check with a dealer. My nav said 3-1/30, can a dealer help me out on that?

TerminatorX5 02-27-2013 11:12 PM

it turns out that the CAR MART that you mentioned couple posts above, is THE one next door to me. he still has another E53 on his lot.

if you go to a dealer, he will charge you an arm and a leg... source maps off ebay, and get the firmware disk (about $10 from a dealer) to update the firmware
