new 4.6is engine noise?

Hi, I just purchased an 02 x5 4.6is. I'm extremely happy with it and promise to post pictures in a few days but in the mean time does the engine of my car in this video sound a bit noisier than usual?

Thanks!!!

i hope i am wrong - chain guide rails???

xsx450 02-27-2013 01:19 AM

ehhhhhh that sounds borderline normal to me, lifters tick a little bit... and cameras pick up faint ticking and make it sound worse sometimes... can you even hear it with the hood closed?

how many miles?

x5Alpine 02-27-2013 10:53 AM

Not really, the only thing you can hear faintly is the vanos

xsx450 02-27-2013 11:18 AM

lifters dont make noise?

epdarks 02-27-2013 11:47 AM

Estoril 4.6.... siiiiiick!

I'd say that sounds relatively normal. Keep a close eye on it. Do you get any chain noise on start up? From my research, it seems like that is the best indicator of timing chain guides starting to fail.

sounds normal, do Your self [and your X5]a favor and use Castrol oil only, it sounds like your water pump bearing is making that thud sound.

x5Alpine 02-27-2013 12:32 PM

It has 118,355 miles on it but the carfax said that the guides, tensioners, and water pump have been replaced... I do get a rattle upon startup though

VANOS. Wait a bit, till I get my new egine insatlled and you'll hear how it sounds without VANOS.

Chain ratlles different - you can hear (and also feel it) rubbling especially shortly after engine start.

Ok, thank you, I was just concerned.... And another thing, I got new tires for the front wheels but not the rear, they're the same exact tires as the old ones except different tread pattern, will this Hirt the car?

Thanks

I am planning on using Amsoil 10W40 European Car Formula. Should I use Castrol 10W60 TWS instead? (03 4.6)

It's not necessary on M62, still it would be nice to use 10W60 unless you're in very very cold climate zone like Alaska. And I'm pretty sure the operation noise will get quiet.

I've a M54 TU (double vanos) with hydro tappet ticking noise, which was confidently eliminated after using the oil designed for high pressure operation.

VANOS, 100%.

Check the sparkplugs for tightness. I just had a coil go out so I brought in to my mech for service. When we pulled the covers off the sparkplug gallery you could hear a knocking, that would disappear with the covers on. I had him replace he plugs while it was in. He found that at some point in the past they had been replaced. Two of them where only hand tight:yikes:
I was getting blowby oil past the plugs:wow:
Could have been really bad if one had backed out enough to blowout and strip threads.

papasmurf..... I'm glad to hear that its the vanos. The car drives great and transmission seems just fine but has never been replaced. I just hope that I don't end up with an engine bearing letting go on me which I've heard happens to these M62's once in a while but its oil has been changed at no more than 10,000 mile intervals throughout its life and I plan on every 5k miles.

electricalserv x5 03-02-2013 04:54 PM

X5Alpine, make sure You have mechanics that know BMWs other wise a novice will do damage, something as small the wrong transmission oil,the wrong part or installed wrong will ruin the engine or X5..................GOOD LUCK,nice X5.

Mine was done every 7k or so and they let go. If you have over 100k, why chance it?

x5Alpine 04-08-2013 04:37 PM

My X5 now has 119,900 miles on it. its been an excellent car. I've been trying to post pictures for about a couple weeks but everything I try wont let me
