Has anyone tried these. Im looking to update my x5. I'd like to see some pics and get an opinion. Im new here and would like some input. Thanks

Cisc0 03-15-2013 11:08 AM

I don't think these are approved by the DOT in NJ (by "these" I mean the clear color you have posted above), but I have the red/smoked LED tails and they are pretty nice.

Dark5yde 03-15-2013 11:12 AM

I have the same as those but smoked. A billion threads on these lights as well if ya search a bit.

Ricky Bobby 03-15-2013 11:32 AM

yuck on the clear ones.

get the red/smoked or red/clear, i have red/clear and love them.

NjChuck 03-15-2013 11:34 AM

Couldn't find any posts on the clear ones. I'll look again, but I probably go with the red smoked thanks guys

XCUSM5 03-15-2013 11:34 AM

I don't understand those clear lights, they have the slightest bit of red so it takes away from the clear look which I don't really like to begin with. The red/clear LEDs do look fantastic though and are a nice way to update the E53s dated rear end

NjChuck 03-15-2013 11:37 AM

I thought about that too. Red smoked is the way to go.

TerminatorX5 03-15-2013 12:11 PM

what is the exterior color of your ride? clear might look OK on white or silver, might look too ricy on the dark color... smoked one will look OK on both light and dark colors... chamces are that the lights will be OK legally as long as they light up "properly" - red for brakes and parking light, red or amber for turn signal, clear for reverse. you can get rid of the egg yolk effect by using titanium light bulbs (or OE lights from a dealer)

NjChuck 03-15-2013 12:50 PM

My X is black. I thought the clear would look nice. But i just saw a thread with the smoked red and I like how it looks.

Dark5yde 03-15-2013 02:30 PM

I love the way my smoked clears look on my black X5. Exactly the look I was going for with out completely blacking the tails out. Just gotta fix that damn rear roundel and get a plate cover now lol

Red/Smoke is the way to go on a black or dark vehicle.

NjChuck 03-15-2013 03:16 PM

Nice, that's the look I'm going for. What do you have in the front and do you have the smoked sides?

Dark5yde 03-15-2013 03:22 PM

Red smoked does looks good. I got mine unopened brand new in box for $80 So I couldn't pass up the deal. Besides it will go better with the all blacked out look for me. Too each his/her own.

I Have clear lights up front (I opened the housing and removed the yellow side piece, added angel eyes, added invisi-bulbs for side markers) I also have smoked side fender markers.

these are OEM by Hella, made in Germany to TUF standards, bearing E-mark, unfortunately nothing like that is available for E53...

NjChuck 03-15-2013 08:28 PM

That's hot!

My search for lights has been a long frustrating road to say the least, as rear options are rather limited and hard to find....but here's my input.

The lights below, (distributed through Mars Performance out of Australia), are produced by a company called "Eagle Eyes Traffic Ind. Co Ltd, which bears an E-mark certificate (amongst others)....their E53 tails are also FMVSS 108 certified. So they appear (on paper at least) to have some quality behind them. As far as LED rears are concerned, these IMO, are the only option as I simply don't trust the quality of the Ebay units. Now obviously these are quite a bit more than their Ebay counterparts around the $320 - $350 range per set.

I contacted Mars regarding shipping to Canada, but have yet to hear back. I'm also waiting to hear back from Eagle Eyes to see if they have any North American distributors, or if the lights available directly from them in Taiwan. The e53 units aren't listed on their site, but ARE still available through MARS...making it a sourcing hassle. Regardless, if I don't hear anything back by early next week I'll get on the horn (instead of emailing) and get some definitive answers as I am also in need of some new lights!

TerminatorX5 03-15-2013 10:21 PM

speaking of this LED lights - has anyone tried to modify the coding line in the facelifted LCM coding to accomodate the LED lights?

The facelifted units have the Brake Distribution Force (BDF) signal that makes the lights flicker (separate from the Cold Monitoring flicker) and I was wondering, if activating that line in the programming code would eliminate the flickering...

just a theory, that i can not test...

X5SND 03-16-2013 12:20 AM

T, if I am successful in tracking down a set of these LED tails....I'll give it a whirl if no one else does before then!

I was going to test this line out when I got coded, my local contact who is also on this board has 2 kids though and just got his dvds and cable a few weeks back so I don't believe he is ready yet, he lives 10 mins away from me.

I was going to visit Slick in Brooklyn but he hasn't been on much lately and I just need his address so I can get an overview of how far he is from me (I think about an hour)

I had done a lot of old fashion way by adding a pair of capacitors ...No more flickering or erro ..

Hey Spencer,

Just wondering did you ever hear any word back on these tails? I just saw their ebay listing and they are like 350 + almost 200 bucks shipping to N. America :wow:

I'll be honest with you I've had my ebay LED tail lights for almost 2 years and can vouch with the quality, no complaints here! If you want to save yourself a few hundred bucks I don't think you can go wrong with the ebay units, I bought from "zsracing" and they advertised as Philips LEDs but i'm sure most of the distributors are selling the same units.

Jay, I totally Forgot about this thread...my memory is failing me in my old age!

I did hear back from Mars, and the factory color units (red w/ clear signal) are $339 AUD Plus another $140 AUD for shipping to Canada. I haven't received anything back from eagle eyes yet....and haven't had a chance to give them a shout. I did notice however, on some other light models eagle eyes produces that because they are a manufacturer, they require a minimum order of 50 units.

To be honest though, I'm hell bent on getting these particular ones because of the design. Tomorrow is a holiday up here so I should have some time to give eagle eyes a shout later tonight!

500 Canadian dollars or so total, you are a wild man! You definitely will be unique my friend, I'll admit the tails are sexy as hell and very clean and OE looking, but too rich for my blood. If I didn't have my Sonar tails already and those were priced around 300-350 shipped, I'd probably bite for a set, just because I'm a huge fan of the clean design as well!

Let me know what you come up with very interested to see if you get them!

blondboinsd 03-28-2013 10:32 AM

Clear tail lights? 2002 called.. They want their trend back ;)

Yeah, it is a bit steep.....but, if you price out Oem replacements from ECS you're in and around the 550 mark ($160 per tail, $115 per inner hatch pc) --- so technically between the 2 options, the LED tails are the more 'economical' choice! :D Lol.

SlickGT1 03-28-2013 12:37 PM

I saw clear tails on an X5 yesterday. I threw up inside my car. I tried to throw up out the window, but it was closed. Now sitting here thinking of RICE tails again, I want to throw up, window is already open.

Ricky Bobby 03-28-2013 12:38 PM

we really should change the topic lol the only reason i bumped the thread is to see Spencer's outcome above with the Australian LED tails from down under lol

Dark5yde 03-28-2013 12:42 PM

I love my tinted clear tails....
