navigation not working in my area

my navigation isnt working in my area for some reason when zoomed out it would show highways and bodies of water but no local streets. it does work when im about 10 miles from home I'm assuming it probably needs updating because I'm using sw 4-1/70 can someone help me out

upallnight 03-22-2013 07:57 PM

Is the area included in the maps?

Whitecat 03-22-2013 09:33 PM

Mine is a 2006 and any new street or area created after that date doesn't show up ...which is normal....now need to up update the CD .. Last time i went to the $tealers they were asking me $200 buck....would love to find better deal...

pap smear 03-22-2013 09:34 PM

I don't see why it wouldn't be it shows everything to the west, north, and east. the only thing to the south of me is the airport

pap smear 03-22-2013 09:36 PM

even when I try to look up an address in my area it doesn't work

TerminatorX5 03-22-2013 10:16 PM

pap smear 03-22-2013 10:22 PM

I just pick the car up the other day but I'm assuming its dvd

TerminatorX5 03-22-2013 10:39 PM

pap smear 03-23-2013 04:22 PM

Did you scroll down to see if your model is listed? There are two types of systems, the older I bus set up and the newer MOST bus system used in BMWs that have iDrive.

BTW, help us help you better by including your model, model year, build date so that we can answer your questions based on the equipment we know is installed based on when it was built between the production years from 1999-2006. :)

The fact that you have a southeast disc installed & you live in the northeast...pretty much gives away the problem. And if memory is correct, the nav CDs are divided into quadrants & the old DVDs are one disc, with the updated DVDs being divided into two discs. It sounds like you have a nav CD installed.

Btw, if I misread or misspelled a lot in this post, I don't have my glasses on, and everything is blurry, so please forgive any screw-ups. :)

TerminatorX5 03-23-2013 05:02 PM

the DVD map uses 1 or 2 disks, depending on year, and cover entire US and canada. you have a CD from a 7-disk set, and you will not have nyc streets on FL DISK. xheck around, there are many active members in nyc nj area, maybe you can test a disk, to make sure it works... and then source a new one

pap smear 03-23-2013 05:10 PM

ok so I'm using a cd from a different region that explains everything. I emailed the person in the.link I posted and he said yes it would work with my car so ill just get it from him

as long as you understand that these are hacked copies that are copied on a DVD R or whatever... for that price you can get OE disk off ebay that are a season or two old, and people are getting rid of them... or, for a half price you can get a copy - the $45 or $80 for the set is not really warranted, to be honest... besides, the part number is matching the 2011 maps, not 2013...

I would not deal with a CL seller - too shady...

Whitecat 03-23-2013 10:14 PM

I just sent him a mail to make sure this works for a e53 (mine 2006)
Any idea what is the car software update about ?

Here is the answer : Yes it will work. I am not local though so I would have to ship it. Did you want an update disc to update your cars software too?

percodan 03-24-2013 05:42 AM

It won't work. That DVD is for the newer CCC computer, you need a CD for a MK3, or a DVD for a MK4 depending on what you have..

Thanks Percodan, so our options are :
1. A 2013 for $200 at the $tealers
2. Ebay less expensive but 1 or 2 Y behind.

Just to confirm, CD vs DVD are related to the E53 year production?
like mine 2006 is DVD BMW on board navigation system north America 2006.2

Cheers

BTW...it was mentioned back in post #11 that there are different DVDs or CDs...depending on if you have the I-bus or MOST (i-Drive) communication bus. And the link to the Craig's List offer...the e53 is NOT listed as being compatible with the discs that were for sale because these are the "CCC" discs which only work with the MOST (iDrive) communication bus.

And yes...the choices are the dealer, or used discs (CDs and/or DVDs), or burnt discs sold by sellers on eBay and other websites.

Again, the OP hasn't identified a model/model year...so it isn't known if they have the MK III (uses CDs only) or the MK IV (can use CDs or DVDs)...but whichever nav unit they have...the "CCC" discs do not work in the e53 regardless of any model/model year.

I purchased region 1 & 2 2012 DVD discs for my 06's MK IV back in February from a vendor on eBay...I paid $30 for the set. The original DVD had the whole USA on 1 DVD...apparently when Tom Tom took over, they split the DVD into two regions.

If you have the MK IV, you need to look for the "HIGH" DVD discs (and you can also use CDs), but again, the "CCC" DVDs are for the newer BMWs that have iDrive...and if you have the MK III...you can only use CDs:

the disk in that link should work, as the cars listed are the iBus cars... and the price is more reasonable...

Qsilver7 03-24-2013 01:55 PM

 Great...thanks for the update. And really consider creating a permanent signature that contains your model/model year/build date (click the USER CP link at top of page)...this info helps us to help you better...as well as helps others they may run across your posts in the future. It gives them a perspective of the content in your posts as far as upgrades & solutions etc. and if it the specifics of your model/model year applies to their situation. :)

Hum, strange i'm awaiting for mine and i will keep you posted how it works.
I was looking at consumers review 400+ and they all gave him 5 stars? Maybe something related to the GPS antenna ? Anyway as soon as i got mine i'll let u know....

pap smear 04-01-2013 05:34 PM

I emailed the seller and they said they can't explain what shows and what doesn't that its tomtom maps not theirs. if I put the dvd in the.computer I would see that its a 2013 edition maps. Google maps on my phone is 100x better so I'm asking if there is any alternatives

pap smear 04-02-2013 10:52 AM

That's interesting (not saying you're wrong) because...I was under the impression that Tom Tom owns Tele-Atlas which now makes the (some feel much inferior) BMW navigation maps...which used to be made by NavTeq until around 2009.

Do you still have the link to the BMW website page that says Navteq still makes the nav maps?

pap smear 04-02-2013 12:49 PM

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...lroadmaps.html

after going to this site on the bottom right corner it has a link to check if your maps are up to date and it sends you to a navteq coverage map but it says its accurate to 2012

I also noticed that the BMW international web page you linked sends us to a NAVTEQ map update PDF that only lists European countries.

Perhaps Europe's navigation DVDs/CDs are still provided by NAVTEQ, whereas the USA/Canada/Mexico DVDs/CDs are provided by TomTom (Tele-Atlas)? :dunno:

Here's the link from BMW NA for info about purchasing updated navigation maps for USA/Canada/Mexico: :) BMW Navigation Map Updates Store

BMW NA maps are sold by TomTom (see my post & link above)....and the highlights in the screen capture of the BMW NA web page for navigation updates. :)

Looks like Europe's maps are provided by NAVTEQ & North America's maps are provided by TomTom.

ok cool so I have no other choice except for the tomtom maps correct?

upallnight 04-02-2013 06:12 PM

I always liked my Garmin unit which I have always used in the X as well as the PORSCHE and Lotus and the map updates are now free with later model Garmins or you can purchase a lifetime of free map update.

Yeah, it looks like that's the only choice we have. It sucks that they still have the things you mentioned that no longer exist included in their maps...perhaps the link at the top of the page that says "report map changes" (click the following link) can help them to update their maps and remove torn down hospitals etc: BMW Navigation Map Updates Store

I have that with the garmin nuvi 50 lm I bought my dad for Christmas and the garmin maps are made by navteq

Qsilver7 04-04-2013 11:07 AM

Geesh...did you read the comments below the video? A few made me really consider my stance on some of the ongoing gun-law issues because I'd like to take out a few commenting in that thread. For one, someone tried to explain the difference between "bimmer" & "beemer" and the education was summarily dismissed...yet they still wanted to cling to their opinion of BMW owners...and the second was the dig at someone owning a BMW "station wagon"...and as an owner of 2 "bimmer" Tourings (and e34 525iT & e39 540iT)...I take exception to that comment.:stfu::rant:

Sadly, if BMW did undertake this feature...it would probably only do so for those with iDrive or the MOST communication bus. :(

Whitecat 04-08-2013 07:35 PM

I just received the DVD from ebay 2013 BMW Navigation DVD High Version Map Update East Disc Replaces 2012 BMW | eBay
....installation's done and everything works BUT .... I don't see any difference with my 06, a street build 3 years ago around my house still no show on that version claimed to be a 2013 update...ok $17 down the drain....what other option other than the $200 at the $tealers for DVD :wow:....at this price, maybe change the entire module $400..with a litlle more update features...meaning DVD free.

Maybe its just me (and my old age)...but my expectation of this new digital maps/navigation isn't all that high. Yes, they're nice and convenient...but for some reason I only have a moderate expectation of their accuracy for some reason. Maybe I'm mentally stuck in the age of old time "paper" maps. :D

And there are some differences with these newer CD/DVDs...that may just be subtle that you're not picking up on yet. I too, have seen some odd things...for instance the land where I work is an old WWII community that used to have multiple streets and small barrack-like houses. In fact, there's even a section of old sidewalk going a long ways down a gravel lot were snow ploys and seldom used specialty vehicles are stored and overflow parking when gatherings are held in a training center in the compound. I noticed the other day while fobbing the gate open, that the nav monitor indicated that I was on Johnson St. ...when I was actually in the drive coming off the south parking lot of our 3 building compound.

I can't even imagine why or how our parking lot is entered as being Johnson St when that area has been razed over 40 years ago. But just as odd as that is, today while getting my summer tires mounted, I noticed that some of the new housing additions and shopping centers within a mile of the vendor were indicated on the map. I popped out the new 2012 disc and put my original disc back in...and none of these additions or POI (shopping centers) came up on the screen.

So yes, there's some oddities, but there's also some new stuff...especially POI data and little things like the checkered flag within the circle in your destinations that have been input etc.

pap smear 04-13-2013 12:59 PM

I'm mad cuz this is suppose to be tomtom specialty and they are dropping the ball. Google maps and my garmin with navteq maps are way better
