Steering Wheel Vibrates

Hi,

I have a 2005 BMW X5 3.0D.

Whilst driving the steering wheel vibrates slightly from side to side when going over 80km/h or so. Then when i brake at high speed the vibration gets a lot worse.

I know that my tyres need changing as they are very old and they will be changed next week. However is this vibration due to my tyres or is it something else?

Usually i would associate this problem with disc brakes however as it vibrates even when driving and not just braking this surely can not be the discs right?

Please help.

Thanks

Unbalanced tires can cause a vibration while cruising. You didn't mention anything about ever changing the tension strut bushings --- when they're shot, a classic symptom is the wiggle under braking as well.

Thanks.

Hopefully when i have my tyres changed next week it will fix the problem then when they are correctly balanced.

Only just recently purchased the X5 so not sure if the tension strut bushings have been changed or not.

If the X was a recent acquisition it may be wise to have it checked out by a reputable BMW Indy. You may have larger issues at play that a trained eye will pick up on. Good luck!

I took it to a BMW dealer a couple of months ago to have the the brake pads replaced. They didn't mention any other issues, however i am not sure they did a full check on it.

In my experience when it's the steering wheel vibrating then it is in the balance of wheels or more often the suspension/steering components.
Rotor will be felt at the brake pedal more then steering wheel.
I would focus on those bushings.
