Engine swap; just for discussion

I have an 01 bmw x5 4.4 and was thinking about upgrading the engine to an 08 and above engine. Have anyone done this swap? I would like to upgrade to the newer six cylinder not the v8.

Thanks

Out of curiosity, why do you want to make the switch?

Dont forget about the DME

I want to keep the truck for a longtime and hopefully the more modern engines are more reliable and fuel efficient.

I would also upgrade the tranny, ecu and all wiring & sensors that supports the car engine.

If you're entertaining this idea because you don't want to part with your e53 I understand; because in that case the cost is a bit easier to justify. However, I'd definitely advise against this route if you're simply after better fuel economy and an updated engine...as its going to cost much more than your X is worth --- in which case you'd be further ahead to dump your X, and move into a model that meets your needs.

Id like to see thins happened. the e53 is classic, with a new engine it would be perfect. maybe even the 3 liter twin turbo diesel from the 35D x5?

Anything is possible. The question you should be asking is "is this cost effective" or "do I know a coding guru who can get everything to function correctly" or "am I willing to spend months of time doing it / having it done / coded".

My sons friend has a mid engine 2nd gen MR2 with a V8 Lexus powerplant, took over 2 yrs to get everything working correctly.

Totally off topic, but what transmission was he able to use?
Nevermind, I read that the first time and missed 'friend', thought it was just your son.

And not just a question of time/cost but finding the right shop to make the coding work correctly. Because of the integration/communication between modules it would take an insane amount of custom software.
