03 X5 shuts off randomly
 

I have a 2003 BMW X5 with 150k on it. Over the past few months it will randomly just turn off when I am stopped in traffic. I put it back in park and it starts right up. It is not tripping any fault codes, its not running rough or any other symptoms.

It has yet to do it when actually driving.

Any ideas? Guessing the computer is faulting and shutting it down but odd that there are no codes.

It is starting to burn oil, but with 150k that's expected.

you did not say if it is 6 cyl or 8 cyl - if it is 6 cylinder, you might want to check the Idle control Valve... today it is a 2nd question related to engine shutting off... let's if other folks can come up with more suggestions...

It's a 3.0 6cyl.

How does one check it or just replace it?

i don't think i am quallified to offer the help - i had this issue in my E39 but never got to fix it, as i traded it in... :dunno:

check the forums, both for X5 and the E39 forums - there should be plenty of info... check bmwtips.com, very nice site for the 5-series...

check the fuel relay--

Does it happen to you when on highway?

I just had this issue on my 03' X5 with 228,000kms. I removed the idle control valve and cleaned it with intake cleaner, it ran good for a bit then i noticed the idle would be a bit high. Same thing, truck would stall from a standing start or going reverse, basically when the truck would first have a bit of load on it. Restarting is no poblem, touch the gas, stalls again, no codes. Finally it threw a code, P0340, generic for cam position sensor bank A. After some research that code is for the intake cam position sensor. Cleared the code truck runs incredible, better gas milage. I forgot to mention that when i was first having the idle problems i did get the code for idle control valve, can`t remember what it was, that`s why i started with cleaning that first. Changing the intake cam position sensor isn`t that hard, the exhaust is even easier. The intake sensor is located under the vanos solenoid. WOrd of warning thou, do no tuse after market sensors, your truck will have issues. The sensor cost $175.00+$4.00 o-ring, which you have to replace as well. Hope this helps

@29singlespeed, have someone with GT1 reset your ecm,tcm and it should take care of the issue. thats what i have done to my X. Mine was doing exactly the same as yours.
