need help 4.6is
 

Hi, so today on my way home from a 400 mile trip in my 02 4.6is w/ 120k miles died. I was going to pass somebody and got the engine to around 4k rpm then it lost all power and the "engine fail safe" came up. I pulled over and shut the car off, then restarted it but it will die after around 4 seconds. the error on the dash isn't there anymore but the car will only stay running if the MAF is unplugged, I tried cleaning it but still no luck. any help will be greatly appreciated.

MAS is bad, not unusual that cleaning doesn't help

Hear all the time about success cleaning the MAF sensor. I have tried it many times. Never has worked for me. Do you have a reusable air filter that was oiled or replaced recently?

would the MAF cause the car to go into the failsafe mode though?, and im not really sure about the air filter, it looks pretty good though.

Not positive about fail safe mode but I do know the test for a bad MAF is to disconnect it and if the engine runs fine when MAF is inoperative the MAF is bad.

No, the engine sounds normal

Happened to me! Popped into fail safe mode and stalled on me.... Ended up being the MAF

Gave some thought to fail safe mode and remembered that I have seen the fail safe mode happen when the MAF was bad, especially under hard acceleration. I have seen the fail safe come on and even go out after a restart. I common symtom is that if will not idle, stalls but will start back up. But the tech test is to disconnect MAF and see if the engine runs fine. If it does, don't bother trying to clean it, replace it.
