A cautionanry Tale: Hub Centric Rings...fixed it

So I took my car in to have the tires road forced balanced and here is my story.

Two weeks ago took my car into Firestone to have my Summer Wheels put on.
Gave them a new pack of hubcentric rings. Got the car back with extreme wobble WTF!
They redo the balancing take it for a test drive and tell me it's fixed.
I get up to speed wobble still there.

Saturday I take the car to Mr. Tire to have them Road forced balanced.
Specifically say check out the hub centric rings if you see any damage here are extras. (composite rings)

158.00 dollars later drive out the shop get up to speed wobble still there.
I go back and they want another 127.00 to diagnose the car (pass on that)

I go to my 20.00 dollar tire guy and have him take all the wheels off.
I carefully inspect the rings...what do I find remnants from previous rings.
I dig in the back and locate some aluminum rings I had ordered last year but arrived too late to put them on.

I remove the composite rings found 3 with remnants, remove the remnants
put on the aluminum rings.
Car is now riding smooth as butter.

So if you have Hub centric rings and still have a wobble.
make sure you have the correct rings.
make sure you inspect the hub that the ring sits on so it is flush.
This is especially important if you have the composite plastic like rings.

Had I not taken it to a shop where I could get up close and watch what was being done, I might still be scratching my head.

Can't tell you how many tire mechanics swore up and down I put the wheels away with a wobble.

Shouldn't the thread title be - Hubcentric rings, a cautionary tale?

What do you mean by remnants? They were destroyed?

Where did you order the aluminum rings from? I am getting slight vibration at highway speed. Long story after BMW screwed up badly.

The tire taker off/balance guy should have inspected wheels/hub for those ring remnants...
we had them on the CEO's pos Honda CR-V, with aftermkt wheels, and the plastic rings never lasted well, and did have parts of the ring(s) stick to both wheel and hub.

But, glad you are running smoothly. RoadForce, well done, is still the way to go,imo.

so its not a road force problem...
mechanixxx problem

dont go to mr tire as they are a ripoff
dont go firestone they dont have roadforce machine

i got the roadforce balancing done last week at a ford dealership for 100$+tax took them 3 hours, no more vibration

Sorry I blame the people who did the road force balancing.
I asked them to take off the rings and have a look see.

I really don't think I needed the balance because the wheels were riding true when I took them off and stored them.

What I was paying for along with the balancing was the inspection of the rings.
Because the back of the shop was closed off I could not look myself.

So I paid 158 and got the car back in the same condition I took it in for.

But yes I do need to change the title because the rings were my issue :-(

here is where I got the aluminum rings bought another set to have on hand to give to whoever buys the car.
