hey guys i just came back from the bike expo in NYC and i've seen a couple of posts about bike racks mainly the Tule T2. I saw this at the Expo and i have to say i was impressed. Its called the Totem Pole and it can hold from 1 to 6 bikes at the cost of 350!

From the looks of it, it was heavy duty and held up to 200 lbs i believe. I was in the market for a Rack and i am pretty sure ill be getting that rack. Just wanted to share with you guys what i found and in case someone else was in the market for a rack.:thumbup:

There are a variety of vertical bike racks available for either hitches or wall mount. Other ones you may want to look at are the North Shore, and the Arbutus.

The former is only for mountain bikes; the latter also works on road bikes.

For me, the issue with all of them is potential frame to frame contact. I have carbon road bikes, and I don't want them banging into each other. A fork mount rack on the roof works best for me, although if I am just taking one bike and no luggage I will often just throw the bike in the back of the X3.

When I look at the Upright Designs rack, I can see the bikes would sway forward and aft with every application of brakes or accelerator. That is when they would rub together. The ones that have the bikes facing frontward, like the two links I provided, only have to deal with side to side sway.

If you have a mountain bike instead of a road bike (usually heavier, often dirty from the trails, and sometimes marked up from impacts with rocks and trees on your rides) then a hitch rack makes sense over a roof rack.

I like the Totem pole rack for the price and compatibility...which is great. My only gripe is there's no "leaning/tilting" feature which would be awesome. But still for the price the Totem pole wins hands down in my book.

Yeah if I was just hauling around a bunch of kids' bikes and wasn't concerned about dings and such then it looks like it'd do a great job.

For now I'll stick with my T2. I'll need the extension for my boys pretty soon though!

Agreed with JCL. For more than 2 bikes, the Arbutus rack seems to be the best solution as it doesn't stick that far back and there's no bike-to-bike contact. The T2 with extension will stick too far back for my comfort, IMHO.

I am a sponsored rider and travel many miles with both road and mtn bikes. I think up right mounts on the roof are not the best route. If they are going on the roof they should be fork mount trays. For my mtn bikes I use a Thule T2. In my opinion these are the best ways to transport bikes.
