DIY for 3.0 valve cover gasket
 

Is there a DIY for valve cover gasket replacement on a 3.0? Seems simple, but these could turn into famous last words.

I dont know what to tell you. If you read the big vanos thread on e46, lots of people report seepage and fit issues with VR. I've used them on my e46 and e36, and both have seeped. Having said that, for all i know, VR is OEM, as they are often the only aftermarket brand you can find.

Go OEM on that valve cover gasket; Victor Reinz gaskets are almost guaranteed to do the job twice.

While you're doing the VCG, get the Vanos seals done as suggested and the sparkplugs too. I used VictorReinz on my E39 and it's showing seepage 2 yrs later. The E53 has the VCG from the dealer (in a bag without brand name)

Victor Reinz is a good gasket - it's OEM supplier like Elring Klinger & Goetze. Any one of these are high quality gaskets. People who experienced issues with VR (or any other one of the above mentioned brand gaskets) made install mistakes. I have VR with 0 problems for quite a few years now.

I'm getting set to do the VC gaskets in my '02 4.4. The DIY on this site says to lube the gasket with glycerine prior to fitting it.

Does anybody know if this is necessary, and serves any purpose other than making the gasket slippery as all hell?

BTW I bought VR gaskets, so we'll see how that goes:dunno:

Not sure about the glycerin.
Make sure you change the 22 grommets as well, place some RTV sealant at the halfmoons & corners (the glycerin might not allow the RTV to seal in those places - but I'm not sure), and use the correct tightening torque (which isn't much - 8 Nm if I recall correctly) and tightening sequence.
