Hub/Axle collar nut removal ??
Hi all,
I need to replace the CV boot gaiter, I`ve got an 18 inch breaker bar 36mm 12 point socket and need to know if "removal" of the hub/axle collar nut is clockwise or counter clockwise? the breaker bar with a two and a half feet metal pipe attached is bending when trying to loosen the nut counter clockwise and looks like any more pressure will snap the bar in two? did you unstake the tabs on the nut and spray with penetrating oil for a few days first? |

If you unstaked the axle nut already and broke a breaker bar I'd try an impact wrench if I were you. I had to spray my axle nuts 5 nights in a row with PB Blaster and when I started my right side after that the nut came off easy with a 3 foot extension on my breaker bar.

As I dont have an air compressor I think I will buy
an electric impact wrench/gun, I seen one for £62 ($93) inc delivery with 450 nm 331 lb ft hopefully that will get the collar nut off? By the way nice AB in you`re avitar :thumbup: |
Yeah try an impact, but word of advice, when you have a nut that is on there tight, such as with the axle nut, you shouldn't just slowly loosen it. So with the axle nut, once you have the wheel on and the tool on the nut, get yourself in position and in a real quick shot, get it loose. The shock from a swift hit usually will get it off. That an penetrating lube to help it along.

I have tried shocking the nut but only just sprayed WD-40 on it today, I will spray it for a few days to see if helps any? Thanks again |
WD-40 isnt gonna cut it. Use PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench or FreezeOFF. They are penetrating oils

I took the strut bolts off, caliper and brake disc,
had the wheel/hub hanging down, put on a bearing puller (3 legged one) to try to push the axle inward? it would not move in the slightest, gave up on it, put the parts back on except the caliper, I will put the brake caliper back on tomorrow. My bro will see his mate (motor mechanic) said the guy wont take anymore than £30 to do the boot gaiter then I can put the X5 through an mot, I have already adjusted the rear brakes and hand-brake cable, renewed the front speed sensor cable (abs/dsc warning lights were on) renewed 2x anti roll bars/drop links and sorted the rear indicator (bad connection) Thanks for all the advice guys :thumbup: |
