With or without HP or torque gains economy should improve as you noted. I looked at adding an X or H pipe. Even dyno test comparisons of X and H pipes are all over the map. Some say gains in both HP and torque when evaluated by $ spent verses gain is quite worthwhile. Some say it only sounds better. The reason is it depends on the engine horsepower and whether it is a high torque engine or a high rev engine and the exhaust system that the pipe is added as to what you get out of either pipe. Just like headers the X or H pipe should improve flow that lowers back pressure to some degree. Most say the X pipe is better than H pipe if you are seeking better performance. I found there is no question that boosted engines with high torque and horsepower show notable and greater gains with an X pipe over an H pipe. The consistent difference is the sound. If I remember correctly X pipe is a deeper sound and H pipe is more raspy, I could have that a** backward. For better performance or mileage the key is to adjust the air, fuel and timing settings to get the most out of any reduction in back pressure. So, if you match up the entire exhaust from one supplier especially if they offer engine software to go with it, you can be sure of the sound and performance expectations. You may have have hit on just the right combination. If not, I am sure it sounds much better.
