No service records?.....
I just purchased a 2005 4.8is and I checked the service record and it only has oil change done all these years....well thats what the service record says.
The vehicle run extremely well, but should i be worried about anything? |
Congrats on the purchase!
what is the mileage on the car? |

it has 57,500 |
Change your oil anyway.. right after you bought it and new filter.
5w-30 Castrol Synthetic Edge ( Black bottle/Jug ). Do not follow BMW interval of 10-15k mile oilchanges or whatever it is.. Change it every 5k at most 6k. I have a 4.8is also, and have the smoking problem... I suspect its cause PO followed dumb BMW intervals which contributes alot to this problem, and it was a Connecticut car.. so probably short trips in the cold winters, contributed even more with engine not to temp, and the ccv and all that. |
this car too is a ct car. im wondering if the previous owner is on here.
but im surprise it has no other service history. like brake job or coolant change or so. im happy that it has no other service history however, which means it hasn't had no problem |
If you are referencing BMW service records, perhaps he didn't have his work done by a dealer.
|
I see a few of these evidently V8's (4 exhaust pipes) that smoke after starting to move after a red light.....Hmmmm...never seen a 3.0 do that..<vbg>
|
Congrats on the X. As already stated, the PO might have it serviced at a private Indy.
:worthless: |
All OP wanted to know is if he made a wise purchase. It is not about a contest of which is better a 6 or 8 cylinder.
Yes, at 57,000 mi. you made a great purchase. Hard to find one with that few miles. It is VERY unlikely that an owner of a 4.8 would be the type to ignore service intervals. The engine offers great performance and the suspension great handling. Generally, a 4.8 will be loaded with all the bells and whistles. The pricey issues of an X usually start somewhere near either side of 100,000mi. Most love their 4.8 so much they trudge through that time and keep enjoying the vehicle. You will meet many of them here. Note, there is a forum for 4.6 and 4.8 owners here. What color is it? Congratulations on your purchase!!! |
My Maintaince Folder is about 2-3 thick ! I kid you not :-/
|
Make sure you have a spare key or a wallet key. You'll thank yourself later.

I'm not sure if there is a particular guideline for this, but you could try to ask your local BMW dealer if they would be willing to pull the service history for the truck. I've heard some are willing to share that information and some are not.
I would do the basics either way: Pay for a PPI, all fluids, alignment, and a high quality detail/paint protection. If all checks out, add gas and go! |

why you say that? the vehicle is great throughout. my only issue is that rough downshift from 2-1, which im going to look into. I did purchase warranty with the vehicle. I went to the dealer just now and they want me to bring in the vehicle to see whats going on. but other than that, the truck is very clean and runs exceptional. shift smooth. engine is very quiet. im surprised for a v8 engine. |
Before doing anything, go to the dealer in person and ask for the service records. Worst case is they tell you no. Even if the dealer gives you a no, it may be that they can direct you to somewhere you can get the records. Vehicles are in the system by Vin no. so the records are there at least through the mfg. warranty. I suppose it is possible but I don't know anyone that would pay for repairs or maintenance the could be done under the warranty at no charge. If none of that works then I agree with epdarks get a thorough inspection so you know where you stand.

Do you know if that is the service record for that dealership or the entire record since birth?

i dont know actually. i might try to get another record from another dealer. |
Just ask the dealer if that is the complete history of the vehicle or could other records be at another dealer, I don't know the answer to that question. I thought they pulled up records by VIN no. and what they pulled up was the complete record of that vehicle regardless of where it was serviced in the BMW dealer network.
|
I heard this several times when I was looking for service history in the past, but the only dealer that would be able to give you a complete service history where the car has been serviced regardless of dealership location, is the original dealership which sold the car in the first place. Other dealers for some reason could only pull info, if it was serviced at their dealership and only what was done at that particular location. I'd call BMW and ask which dealership it was purchased from new and I'd call them for complete service history. Depending on the dealership they might or might not release that info. Good Luck!

Great find on the low miles, especially on a 4.8is.
Definitely get a good check up and be prepared to spend the most money in first 2 years of used car ownership to get her "in order" to your standards, I know thats what I've went through. However, after almost 2 years of ownership I can say that my '03 runs like a top, is full of fresh fluids, belts, tensioners, and most front suspension parts, new tires/wheels, fresh air struts/compressor, and is detailed to be fresh as can be! I was pulling my hair out with all my "repairs and maintenance" since I bought it but now that its all up to speed I can really enjoy it, I hope you don't have to do the maintenance I had to do on my 3.0, but looking back, having a well maintained, low miles X5 (I have 68k currently) is going to hold value nicely. |
Service records are nice, BUT..A REALLY GOOD inspection would suffice.
Probably oil changes are the most important, look under the oil fill, stick your finger in there and see if there is any foamy sludge....how's the brake fluid look, how about the coolant ? Some car just "look" beat, while others look "good"...(my friends laugh at me but I say that a car "talks to me"..... Then again, a dealer car has probably been to the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH, less likely for a private party |
Bought my X in Montreal Canada but original purchase was phoenix Arizona USA and transit to Toronto Canada. First time i went to the dealer ..and last ...(but this is another story) for oil changed, they took my key insert into the computer and got 4 pages of Maintenance many minors thing including the transit USA to Canada...very surprise that your X5 got zero maintenance at BMW other than oill changed during the warranty period ....
|
right now the car is great as it sits. things im doing is simply to have a peace of mind.
im going to get the oil changed or probably get the tranny software updated on friday. The only "issue" i see so far is the rough downshift from 2-1. |

Nice ride and find. LeMans Blue with that many miles is a rare gem. Good luck with it and welcome to the Big Boy Club. What color is the interior?
Please place all the info in your signature such as I have done. This gives us a fast way to see what car you have so we can give you information faster. |

Its the cream/white interior. I was worried about it since I always get black/dark color interior, but I LOVE this interior. Its nicer than I thought....maybe because the interior is spotless. |
