screeching noise after power steering flush
I had a PS line leak. Had an Indie replace the leaking lines and replace the PS fluid...( not sure if he did the complete flush). I also had some front suspension work done on the same day. Soon thereafter, I started hearing very loud screeching noise when I cut all the way to the extreme on either side. It happens whether I am driving or not. Took it back to Indie , he said it was the PS pump or fluid related issue. I had ordered fluid from ECS Tuning. he , however, put dextron III as the cap reads "ATF" which i believe was right choice.
do I need to put a different fluid or is my PS pump failing? thanks as always! 2005 x5 4.4 82 k miles; 2k miles on new motor |
Your PS should be filled with ATF. I use synthetic ATF and do not have any screeching sound.

Yes, ATF is correct, have you checked the level yet? There might have been an airbubble that freed up and now you are low on fluid.
FYI, there is generally noise in any vehicle when you turn the steering all the way to full lock and hold it there. Is it that same sound, but just louder than normal? |
Flushing and replacing the Dextron III in the system might fix your screeching problem.

Dexron III is ATF and is what is recommended. I've mixed brands and types of ATF in other cars PS systems before without any noise problems though. (Dexron 3, 4, Dexron/Mercon)
If the fluid isn't low, then an actual flush of ATF through the system would be the next step. Perhaps some dirt/debris got into the system during the repair? |
i swapped out fluid with Mobil 1 ATF(..multivehicle) twice...i see some imrpovement but i still hear it though ...will do the flush

make sure you dont overfill the oil, there is a definite level on the dipstick which you can see if its overfilled or underfilled. I would think overfilled would give you some problems too.
FWIW I used the Mobil 1 ATF and have had great results with just about 4-5 fluid exchanges with a turkey baster, exchanged about a quart of fresh fluid. |
i used the turkey baster method as well...i see two markings on the dipstick ..i filled it upto the middle of two markings...

Overfilling won't cause any mechanical problems, but could cause a mess as that extra space is to allow for heat expansion and room to slosh around while driving. The cap has vents in it and fluid will leak from there if it is too full.
