Just blew out a speaker...

So... I guess after 120k miles, and regular stereo use, one of my speakers finally blew.

So here comes my question... What would you do? Replace the one speaker? Go with the BSW upgrade? (Which is a bit expensive)...

Does anyone have an extra front door speaker laying around? I think it's a midrange? Please let me know, this is going to drive me NUTS!

RichiRich 07-07-2013 03:56 PM

Rich--good to hear from you bro! I'll hang in there, i'm sure someone has a speaker laying around in their garage...

hope all is well with you dude!

I upgraded to BSW speakers, amp and subwoofer, IMO well worth the expense. All plug and play. Has been installed for several years, no problems other than I am deaf. Sorry, I trashed the BMW speakers.

X5SND 07-07-2013 06:43 PM

Next to squeaks and raddles, a blown speaker is next up as impossible to live with! Can you do the BSW upgrade in stages? Say front doors first, then the dash and rears ad a later date? It would save you from shelling out for the whole get up at once...whether or not it's more expensive that way though I couldn't tell ya!

bcredliner 07-07-2013 06:57 PM

Give them a call if you want to upgrade in stages. They were very helpful when I did the install.

Naz24 07-07-2013 07:17 PM

Thanks for the tips guys. The BSW system Is just so tempting, especially bc of how horrible these speakers are.

I found two used speakers on eBay, from a 4.8is, used for two years. For 20 shipped, it's a quick replacement

If that car had DSP, and mine does not, will those speakers still work in my car?

Fist pumpin' too hard...

Doru 07-07-2013 08:57 PM

I replaced the OEM speakers from my e39 with these here. You need to take off the plastic encasement of the tweeters for them to fit. Everything else is plug and play. I don't know how the BSW speakers sound, but the Polk Audio are much better than the OEM ones, and much cheaper than the BSW. I know some other people replaced them with Boston Acoustic, but these are not produced anymore.

I just threw mine away, though one was broken.

Make sure to look at the BSW instructions on how to replace the speaker itself unless you get the speaker and baffle as one out of a salvage yard.

bcredliner 07-08-2013 01:08 PM

I purchased my BSW speakers several years ago but at that time I needed nothing to make the upgrade, I just pulled the old speakers and replaced with BSW speakers, no alterations. I was not attempting to get to audio heaven but I certainly recognize they are much better speakers.

bring me some hot white girl..and i can have a speaker for you......
1 brunette model looking chick..= 1 speaker....
1 Blonde Blue eyes chick =2 speaker..;)

lmao!....

Cisc0 07-08-2013 09:05 PM

Yo Naz open up that door panel and pull the speaker pod out. Most of the times, what goes its the sordering points from speaker to connector plug. Do that before ruling out a speaker. If it is the speaker, I still have my OE ones in storage I believe you can have'em.

pnoyako85 07-08-2013 09:07 PM

Spke to him already, he ordered the speakers today,. Lol. I had my spares too lol

Hope he ordered BSW and upgraded himself. For the dealer price of one you can get two BSWs.

no just one stock of ebay

bmwguyx5 07-10-2013 10:50 PM

Here's an alternative that you can explore:

These guys will repair your speaker for a reasonable price.

My subwoofer from my LX470 blew and these guys repaired it 35 shipped.

Interesting. Will keep them in mind.

Received my speaker from eBay. Actually a fellow forum member: lemans4.8. I have yet to install them

pezho405 07-11-2013 12:38 PM

I think i have a front right door speaker that still works, i though i blew it because there was a sound like a rattle but the new speaker didnt change that much so it was probably something else. i also recently learned my rear right doesnt work at all so thats a bummer

Ricky Bobby 07-12-2013 09:23 AM

Hey Cisco can you post up pics of what to check on the soldering? I have a solder iron and will help Naz out with this as I'm suspecting that might be his problem

Cisc0 07-12-2013 09:44 AM

2 Attachment(s)
Naz it is not your AMP. So rule that out. See the attached pics which shows which soldering points pop and cause 95% of speaker failures in our bullshit speakers. What I did was remove the cheap wire and added fresh wires and resoldered them suckas back. Afterwards I protected the new wires and heat shrink them.

Ricky Bobby 07-12-2013 09:47 AM

Naz get some speaker wire and some extra solder, I have the gun, we can do this.

Naz24 07-12-2013 09:50 AM

Sweet, Cisco and RB, you guys are the best...

What kind of wire? Do I get it at radio shack? Home Depot?

RB-- I'll get more soldering stuff

Ricky Bobby 07-12-2013 09:52 AM

Just normal speaker wire should be good, someone correct me if i'm wrong, I'd actually rather have the speaker wire that has the plastic sheathing over it so I can strip a piece to be soldered and the rest is covered.

Any 16gauge speaker wire from Radio Shack will do. Make sure you heat shrink the solder points.

Naz24 07-12-2013 10:14 AM

Good stuff. Thanks Cisco.

Naz24 07-12-2013 10:22 AM

I'm thinking of just buying 4 BSW mid bass speakers. Replacing them, and going from there.

Best money you will ever spend!!! You should have been had them though, I was selling them for a steal last year. Sold one set to Mike and one to Richie Rich.

Naz24 07-12-2013 10:56 AM

I remember. I almost bought them from you!

The install looks interesting. Removing and re applying glue. Easy process?

Very easy. No soldering will be need, just make sure you cut in an angle the metal points on the speaker pods where you will insert the new crimp connectors. With the pods facing down ward, the positive is the right side (red) negative is left (black) you don't use the middle prong. After I inserted the new crimp connectors and secured them, I also heat shrinked that just to avoid any b/s down the line. I also added Dynamat sound deadning to the door. I cut out a square big enough to cover the hole where you insert the pods in door.

Ricky Bobby 07-12-2013 11:33 AM

Dynamat is a good idea, that reminds me I need to add some silicone to my gas cap door that rattles when the music is playing.

When and if my DSP speakers go someday I will most likely be replacing as well with the BSW package.

bcredliner 07-12-2013 01:20 PM

 Your gas door wouldn't be rattling if you turned down the base--don't ask me how I know.

epdarks 07-12-2013 01:37 PM

One of my other hobbies is home audio, I don't know much about car audio but I wanted to make one point.

Rarely is it overall volume (spl) that will blow your speakers. 99% of the time it is distortion. Distortion will happen when you are: over-boosting certain frequency ranges through the head unit (usually bass +++). Another way is by feeding the sound system a distorted signal... shitty recording quality, live set recording, or just playing most any of this new-age hyper-compressed pop/rap/electronic music.

If you want more bass, turn the treble down. If you want more treble, turn the bass down. Increase volume level as needed. When you feel your ears hurt but you think "this isn't that loud"... you are most likely listening to a distorted signal. (Sound waves are going ___ at the top of the range, something our ears and speakers hate).

bcredliner 07-12-2013 01:51 PM

I don't remember the construction of the original speakers but at 9 years old rather than blown by distortion or any other operating possibility it could be that dat the material is britteral den sickels a hangin' from da barn last winnner

epdarks 07-12-2013 02:04 PM

Your posts always make me laugh, BC. Could be old age, very true.

Naz24 07-13-2013 12:03 AM

Funny about the type of music you mention above.

I rarely listen to this new shit music, but I was playing a song that was somewhat dub steppy (sail by AWOLNATION) when I realized my speaker blew or stopped working. Right in the middle of that song.
