spyder taillights brake warning

Got the new spyder taillights in. Getting the brake warning message. I read up on the other posts about switching the pin 6 to 4 . but mine are 12345 with have connectors. The sheer lights have 2345 pins. I have a preface lift. Any ideas?

tmv 07-10-2013 12:05 PM

LED or regular?
Did you have someone step on the brake and you check to see if they light up? Is the 3rd brake light working?

blackx 07-10-2013 12:08 PM

regular lights . bought all new bulbs. the message reads check break lights and check rear lights

tmv 07-10-2013 12:23 PM

Do they work when you visually inspect them on the car? light up when someone stepping on the brake?
I'd clean the connectors and plug in again, and make sure it is tight.

Have you verified all the lights work properly in the rear first? I.E. get someone in the car, turn on the parking lights to verify the running lights work, then step on the brake lights as well. If they light up fine, then we need to do some troubleshooting here.

Everything worked with the OEM lights prior to install. On the spyders I get the turn signals and the driving lights. Brake light which is the bottom never lights up when pressed .. Here's my OEM connector and the spyder pins.

Ricky Bobby 07-10-2013 01:53 PM

You have the LED tail lights or the regular halogen bulb lights? (you would know if you had the LED versions)

Regardless, I think you need to swap a pin somewhere. When I first hooked mine up the parking light function of the brake lights didn't work, they only lit up when I pressed the brakes.

tmv 07-10-2013 02:25 PM

He said he had regular ones.
Blackx, you forgot the pics. Take close-up shot of the pins on both.

Obviously the Spyder taillight connector is missing pin #1. I guess that would be the brake light connection.
Test and find out which one of the 2345 pin is the brake light connection, then move it to #1 to see if brake light work.

Do the pins pull right out from the spyder harness? Cause on the OEM harnerss there is 5 wires going into it. I'm thinking your. On the right track

I replied to your PM :)
All pins on tail light connectors, come out individually. You need to pry it out with a pointed tool.A small pointed screwdriver should do it.
These OE 6 pin connectors on either side ,only uses 4 pins,so on these connectors ,all you need to do is swap pins as follows:-
RIGHT LEFT
6 TO 4 1 TO 3

These procedure is exactly the same connection as the OE cable adapter you can buy from BMW,to install facelift tails of prefacelft, albeit at no cost ;)

blackx 07-11-2013 09:24 AM

tried but no dice . swapped driver side 3 to 1 and and passenger side 6 to 4 ? what are the wires colors that should be in each slot ?

TerminatorX5 07-11-2013 09:46 AM

sometimes the LCM will kill power to the defective circuit, to prevent a short circuit... since you have the OE tails and the replacements - when you swap them, the OE tails always work? There are only 4 pins on the replacement lights, one of them is bound to be ground, so the other 3 are for the individual lights/light banks... a ground wire on the car harness should be brown without any other marking, can be verified by an OhmMeter... that will leave you with 4 other pins (from the picture looks like 4 pins, could be 3 remaining... the fender tail light (not the one on the bottom hatch) has a dedicated turn signal, a parking light and a brake light, which is 3 circuits... that means, you have one ground and 3 individual circuits on the light that need to be matched to ground and 3 individual circuits on the car...

I agree, this is much more than a plug-and-play should involve, but it is doable - it is not like you have a harness with 25 wires...

Also, are you able to bench test the new lights? to see if they actually work to begin with...

You got PM again..Here are the pics (mine)..it really is easy.just swap pins!
Unless yours ,being 2001 is different from the later pre-facelift.

blackx 07-11-2013 02:45 PM

That's the driver side. I matched that up. How bout the pass side?

If your left side is the same as mine, then does it work?If it doesnt ,then its an issue with the spyder tail lights and not the connection.
If the left matches ,so will the right...no ,I dont have a pic for the right side !

blackx 07-11-2013 03:08 PM

Not sure how the wires will matchup when on drver side different plugs being pulled then the passengerbside. Incontact with dt moto hoping they will replace them

Have a read on above link......Someone with a 2001 and similar issue, but his connectors seem different to yours.
If you check my posts in that thread, you know that the 2001 harness is same as facelift X5s,unlike mine.

hmmm i might have missed it but is the warning for a bulb out? "check taillight bulb" or is it an actuall brake warning? maybe it just happend coincedentially that a brake sensor or something went bad or came loose?

blackx 07-20-2013 04:56 PM

Glad you got it sorted! So with a set of good tail lights, all you had to do was swap the pins as "someone" here suggested :D

pezho405 07-21-2013 07:54 AM

Wow noce looks great!

sirshan 12-29-2013 03:35 PM

Anyone ever hook up the empty bulb socket below the reverse light?

Ricky Bobby 12-29-2013 03:42 PM

Yes, to the rear fog lights, I have done so :)

See the DIY thread for the details, you need about 100 bucks worth of dealer materials, 2 hours of time, and someone to code it for you (if you don't have the OE trailer hitch)

If you have the OE trailer hitch installed, you don't need coding.

sirshan 12-29-2013 03:48 PM

Thx. I do have the oem hitch. Ill look it up.
