Selling? Nope, she keeps pulling me back
1 Attachment(s)
I am TORN! Love my X5. But I'm trying to get realistic here. 2004 4.4i with 119k miles. Runs like a charm, but have already put close to 4500 in repairs this year (transfer case taking the most of it). Car is cosmetically perfect (beyond a few highway chips). So now what.
I've been looking at 335xi m sport coupes.., 6 speeds, obvi! So although I'd be paying more per month to get a 2011 335 (my X5 is paid off completely), is it worth the 400 or so payment to know that repairs are covered? Not sure. If I knew I'd have no problems for the next 50k miles, it'd be a no brainer. Who knows... What's your take? Ps-- I just went for a spirited drive, and damn! For 9 years and 119k, the X holds that road (the vredestein tires most definitely are incredible). It will be hard to let her go... Attachment 59793 |
I feel your pain brotha, I often get the same exact thoughts as I like change cars every other year. I've got the autobug.
|
Usually when I get bored of my cars I do a mod to them or put different wheels on, it usually keeps me happy for another year or two :)

Depends on your need. I you aren't doing much driving, then keep the X. If you plan on driving a lot, switch it up. Sure you are going to start whackin up payments to BMFS, but if it gets you into something you really want, might be a small price to pay. Just keep in mind, you're coming from an X and going to a 3 series. So if you are used to the room and just throwing bags and such in your whip, you're going to have an adjustment period.
ORRRRRR... get an X5M... those go for $400/ mo right? |

Hey bro heres an idea for you, in order to not get sick of my X5 I have this: http://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/cro...--9_600x0w.jpg I think maybe you need to get yourself on 2 wheels of motorcycle heaven, MUCH cheaper than a 37k 3-series that just came off lease :) |
I used to ride motorcycle too. From Suzuki GSX-R to Yamaha R1. Most of my riding friends no longer does, so it was collecting dust more than getting ridden. I haven't been on a 2-wheels for about 5 yrs now.

Used to have Suzukis, SV650 and SV1000S before I bought my Triumph, since my wife comes out on rides a lot its a real pain in the ass having someone lean on your back on a sportbike haha. Would love to get a Triumph Speed Triple or Ducati Streetfighter for spirited rides by myself or for city riding however, the cruiser is phenomenal for long trips but gets tedious in slower moving places like crowded towns, etc. |
Maybe a repost dupe...can't get post from a couple mins ago to show up.
Nazario, The question(s) should be is/are the ~$400 a month/$5Gs a year for the next few years of how much importance to you? If the dough is doable, in the budget, then it's simply your choice as to your wanting a newer different car, and one under an umbrella... Other consdieration is obvious as to how you will be using a car for the next couple years, post school: daily driver, NJ vs the streets of Gotham City, etc. And, for non-work days, what do you want/need in a car. You young people with jobs and income have a diff slant on cars than us few older retired bums, as few of us geezers are looking to toss a car, due to fiscal considerations. In other words, ~$5Gs a year, (cost of newer hot rod 3 vs current X5), covers a lot of maintenance cost-wise, though the time and aggravation for potential kaboom! maintenance is also a factor. And, it boils down to driving what one really likes/wants to, if economics 'work', vs driving what one currently has... Nothing you probably haven't thought of, or considered! GL, Ol'UncleMotor |
this is turning into a what-other-toys-do-you-have-to-distract-you-from-X-repairs

The depreciation on the 2011 will end up costing you 2x E53 X5s.
From your $400 payment, you'll be lucky to get half of that back when you go to sell. New (almost) BMWs are an entirely different ball game, cost wise. Anything out of warranty will eat you alive, too. IIRC, you are a young guy who is fresh out of college. Saddling yourself with a car payment is the worst think you can do at this stage in your life. |
Keeping an old car up is almost always a better decision financially than buying a new one -- especially considering the resale value of X5s.
|
Even though mine is a 3.0 the way she roars to life when I turn the ignition key each morning helps pay down all the toil and sweat. I'd be torn also.

Great insight from all of you-- I had thought about depreciation. It's going to be bad on a 335...
My commute to work is about 8 miles worth of back country roads (tons of fun actually). The thing that scares me is maintenance, but I guess even with lots of money towards maintenance, the depreciation would outweigh that. My decision is to keep my eyes open for the "right" new car, but not to rush anything. If it comes along, great, if not, I'm still in love with my X5. People still think it's brand new. |
