I definitely know what the first one is..."catch with key code" means that your VIN will be required to order it, and it will arrive ready to use with your existing keys and will match the other lock cylinders (ignition & glove box).

I can only assume that the second part nbr is for a catch with a key which doesn't match your existing keys, ignition, & glovebox. Every now-and-then you run across threads where an owner will reveal that there ignition key won't open the door & trunk etc...this scenario just occurred on an e38 forum today (well 7/15/13): Keys don't work in door or trunk

Forgot to ask, does the new cylinder come with the key??

eskaeone, if you are asking - what isn't working or broken? What year X5 do you have? I had a door lock cylinder issue (my remote locking didn't work), during which I learned how to repair the broken parts in the lock cylinder (quite easy) and then repaired my remote system (the remote receiver mounting in the rear hatch).

No, when you order using the part nbr for the "catch with key code LEFT" (#11 in diagram below)....your existing key will fit/work in the cylinder if the key you have is the original one or a new one purchased from BMW based on the car's originating VIN.

One last thing, the spare door and ignition key, (51218236594) when ordering that key does it come all ready cut or does BMW charge extra to do so?

The reason I'm asking is because this key (and the cylinder for that matter) seems to be available from other retailer besides BMW. but I wonder how they have these items available. Do they (the Retailers) have access to your VIN and are able to sell you the coded cylinder and keys that work for a specific BMW?

If you order a key from BMW...it will already come cut for the cylinders and contain the correct EWS "ISN" (individual serial number) required to start your car. All you have to do is insert it into the lock cylinder or the ignition and it will lock/unlock your car and start the engine.

If you purchase a remote key, the only thing left to do is program it for FZV/DWA (remote central lock/unlock & arm/disarm)...but you can do that right in your driveway or the dealers parking lot...we post that information here at least 2 or 3 times a month. :D

I don't know what a key from a non BMW dealership will do...you'll have to inquire with them. BMW doesn't share their database with anyone else...but some people have invested in equipment that can read your control modules to access the ISN, then write to a new EEPROM (chip) that can be used in a key. But again, you'd need to inquire with the seller of the key if they are including this service along with the key...if they don't, then all you're getting is a blank key that will need to be cut by a keysmith...and it will be up to you to find someone that can read/write to the key's chip for it to be able to start your car.

Well, first My key fob stopped working, so I had to manually lock/unlock the my 2001 X5. then one day the lock cylinder broke and actually came out attached to the key!..lol ahhh you gotta appreciate the love/hate relationship.
I got it figured out now, hopefully the prices on Realoem.com are accurate and I can go buy a new key and a new cylinder without having to pay as much money that I thought I had to. I want to buy a new cylinder, my old one is in pieces and I dont really want to fix it just to have it fail again. I hate the entire design of these doors that come on the X5's from the window regulators, to the door locks, to the freakin cylinders, that whole design sucks. sorry had to rant a bit.

I have the same issue. How did you get the door open if both FOB and Barrel broke?
