Weird tire wear issue

Ok got 235/65 r17 all the way round, passenger side tire started to show wear on the outside, so had the whole alloy with tire moved to the drivers side and the drivers side alloy/tire went to the passenger side.

After maybe 1000miles of driving no sign of wear on the side of the car that was initially giving me the worn tire, yet the tire that was wearing on the outside continued to wear, does this mean I have a bad tire or bad alloy or both?

As another test I have now moved this worn tire/alloy to the rear and so both my front tires are now ‘good’ as such so I can monitor and see if the front left or right wears or still follows the particular problem wheel/alloy….

To further confuse me I did have a slight wobble of the steering wheel when I hit 100kmh on the highway, the recent change has made this steering wheel wobble vanish…..???

are your tyres directional? And have they been recently balanced?

when a tyre is already worn, it will continue to wear on that area regardless of what side you have put it on or whether your wheels have been aligned.

You need fresh new tyres on whatever axle is wearing and a 4 wheel alignment, and wheels should not be aligned while you have unevenly worn tyres on the car.

I had same issues. Make sure you go to someone who knows what they are doing with a digital alignment machine.

thanks for replies nope haven't had them balanced, and find it kind of strange that the same outer wear has followed tire regardless of the fact i changed the side of the car it is on .....anyway ....will wait till it wears more if it actually does, and get em all changed and then get the alignment....

well looks like my wear issue is following the tire /alloy, maybe it just needed proper balancing in the first place

confusing as this tire/alloy was on the front left and wearing on the outside, so swapped it with the front right and still wore, then to the back right and still wearing, if it was an alignment issue would the side of the front axle that showed our tire wear continue to wear the 'newer' unworn tire

the wear will follow the tyre, as I stated previously, if the tyre is already worn on either inner or outer edge, it doesnt matter which, you will never be able to properly align it or 'correct' the tyre wear. you need a fresh set of tyres and the alignment properly carried out. Put the bad tyre on any corner of a vehicle which is correctly aligned, and a bad tyre will still wear on the edge that it is worn on...

post above might seem confusing, but if the tyre is already worn it will continue to do so. The car cannot be propertly aligned without new tyres fitted. Make sure all 4 corners aligned. Proper maintenance would be to have the alignment done every 8-12 wks as even one bump up a kerb or such can knock it off gain by the time youve driven home.

ok thanks, bit confused with this worn tire up front i was getting some shaking nothing too drastic when i hit 110kmh, moving it to rear alleviated this problem, does it mean the tire i moved to rear was not balanced correctly? or even a dud tire causing this?
