For all you HID gurus

Dumb 12V noob question.

If I suspect one of my bulbs is shot, aside from just swapping sides on the bulbs, do I just confirm I am getting 12V off the leads when it is on

pezho405 08-03-2013 08:06 AM

No i think if its HID the Voltage comming out of the Ballast to the bulb is MUCH higher

jsoto 08-03-2013 08:14 AM

In that case....I'm better off just swapping bulbs and see if the problem follows the swap ?

Just want to do deduction in a smart manner...

pezho405 08-03-2013 08:33 AM

I think that would be the simplest solution. Its a bit tight in there.

Most likley its just your bulb.

swap the bulbs and see if the problem follows the bulbs. there is a whole hell of a lot more than 12v going to that ballast lead.

Fresh Morimoto bulbs on both sides. Same deal. DS bulb no juice.
Next steps HID gurus ?
How do I verify ballast power.

Is it literally putting 2 probes and a meter on it .....

Ricky Bobby 08-16-2013 11:26 AM

Did you email TRS customer service about it? They are usually very helpful, and do stand behind their product!

You may want to look into the contacts on the D2S plug, they told me when I had Morimoto bulbs that the issues with firing the bulb on the drivers side could be due to the "plug contacts" on the D2S plug on our stock ballast may have spread too far out over years of use, and to take a small pliers and squeeze the contacts slightly in, so it makes the plug fit tighter on the bulb. Didn't try it because I already had new Philips, but it makes sense.

Not stock ballast - these are fogs I'm working with.
New Bulbs - Same Problems.
Just need advice to confirm/deduce it's the ballast

Try swapping the ballast

Wait so you are using morimoto bulbs with 35w hid bulbs in the fogs? If so, your problem is the canbus system. You need to install error cancellers to get them to light up, the lcm will shut the circuit down if it senses a bulb out.

Get the "standalone canbus harnesses" from TrS, plug them inline and you should have no problems.
