CEL light and lines in display

Anyway to check error without OBDII scanner?

Also have horizontal lines in Display, anybody have experience with this? Time to replace?

depending on the error, you could have used a parts store scanner to scan it, but i think in CA it is not allowed for the stores to do it for you... if you meant, like on the old E32, E34, E36 models, when you could read the code by flashing the CEL - no, you can't do it with the E38, E39, E46, E53 cars, you need to connect to a 20-pin port under the hood on older versions or strictly 16-pin OBDII port in the cabin, and need either a code reader/scanner or a laptop with specific software...

horizontal line on the display - this is very vague... are those physical scratches? are those dead pixels? are those radio interference lines/out of sync? more details, if you can, please...

Display? Which display...can you add a bit more description/directions/detail so that we'll know exactly what you're referring to since we can't visually/physcially see your vehicle? :) There's multiple "displays" in an X5...the instrument cluster itself has multiple displays (the Graphic Display, Check Control Display, Service Interval Display, & left/right warning light displays)...then there's the MID or Nav displays depending on which one your X has.

Help us help you better by creating a signature that has your e53's model/model year/build date information. This helps us to be specific when answering your questions because there are differences & changes along the production run from 1999-2006 with multiple models, engines, transmissions, etc.

For example, you could have the low instrument cluster or high instrument cluster or the M-instrument cluster...we have no way knowing which you have without an image or you specifically giving that detail when you post when there's no signature or reference to which model you have or how it's optioned. :)

Examples of different "displays" based on location in the vehicle:
