I'd be crazy to pay that much. I spent a total ~$200 for all my diagnostic software including the laptop and connection cable. I have INPA/EDIABAS (NCSExpert is part of it) GT1/DIS44, SSSProgmanv32, and P.A Soft 1.4

I spent $150 on my setup, just got a used Dell D620 laptop on ebay (make sure windows xp, at least 50 gb hard drive which is WIPED CLEAN AND FRESH INSTALL OF WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 3 PROFESSIONAL), bought a new extended battery (it came with charging cable), it was refurbished by a computer place and I bought that for 90 bucks shipped, 20 bucks for the battery.

Then I got the Romanian diagnostic package which comes with all software above and cable for 40 bucks. Works like a charm. Save the 350 on some fun mods :)

Software/cable from here:

Laptop from here (or you could search other options, but it is the same laptop I use just different seller)

Dell Latitude D620 14" Core 2 Duo Laptop 2 16GHz 2GB 60GB | eBay

Total cost is about 170 if you get both through those listings, look around ebay though there are a TON of used laptops floating around, just make sure they are fresh install of windows and wiped hard drive

This package doesn't list the e36 as one of the supported models; anybody know what it would take to work those cars? Different software or adapters? I might go for this package, but it'd be nice to be able to use it on my kids' cars as well.

I'm not sure actually, why not send a message and ask? Is it possible the software works for E36 but you just need the 20 pin adapter cable?

I know E39's use DIS, not sure about E36 but if it does you probably just need the 20 pin round cable for dianostics.

the laptop wont ship to canada i guess i gotta find some thing else .. does it matter what kind of laptop i use or does it have to be dell?

I am not sure that E36 is fully OBDII compliant across the model years... might be OBDI only, and might not have the full computer support... nevertheless, if does, you will need a 20-pin round port connector for those models...

the OBDII was in place from 1996+, that was a reason the US spec E39 was delayed in production by a few months back in the day, to allow the OBDII implementation... I have to refresh my memory on this, but i remember, there was a commotion among the bimmerphiles at the time... wikipedia, here i come to you again for more info...
