"Check Engine Oil Lev"
I have been reading through the forums this morning regarding the Check Engine Oil Level message and almost every post ended up at that it's "Normal". But I just got an oil change about 4 months ago at a BMW dealership and about 3000 miles later I get the "Check Engine Oil Lev" and the oil level is at Min on the dipstick. I don't think that's "Normal", right?
Forgot to mention it's a 06 X5 3.0i. |
Every BMW dlr and their spec literature will say that your oil consumption is within 'specs', fwiw.
And, maybe the dlr that did your oil change shorted you a qt on the fill...it happens. I would top up the oil, starting with a quart, drive it to fully warmed up/hot, let it sit for 15 mins, check stick, add more if necessary. Then go drive it for a few thou monitoring the oil level. Pretty 'normal' for many of our Xs, and I still think you might have received a short fill. GL, mD |
Sounds pretty normal.

Be sure to check the oil at operating temperature before adding oil. When you have verified the oil is at the full mark, again when X is at operating temperature. Then track the mileage and check oil at each 1000mi. mark to verify how many miles it takes to burn a quart. I have not had a 3.0 but I don't consider a quart per 3,000mi. as normal.
Were you using a qt. per 3,000mi. prior to the oil change? |
Perhaps a bad level sensor. There is also a pressure sensor that goes bad on these.
|
No reason to suspect a bad level sensor if in fact the dipstick also shows it being low.
Completely normal IMO. I'm with MD. |
Scanned over that part - certainly if it's low on the dipstick, nothing unusual - its doing it's job by letting you know.

Within BMW specs.

During hot summer months in Texas, I can consume a quart of 5W-30 every 2000 miles with some contribution from a valve cover leak. I now run the 10W-60 "M" oil June through September while we do our boat towing and average a quart every 3500 miles. Not too bad with more than 240,000 miles on the engine.
2002 X5 3.0 241,000 miles 2004 325i 107,000 miles |
I just had the same sort of issue. Check engine oil message popped up, intermittently... Perhaps my driving style had something to do with it. Haha.
I just love that 4.4i V8. A couple courts of Royal Purple 5W-30 and it's all taken care of. |
No leak?

Make sure you wait 10 min or so before you check after engine is shut off, need to wait for oil to collect in pan
