Dynavin D99+ -, Pioneer AppRadio3- users are you happy with your purchase?

Hey guys,

I am interested in changing my OEM Navigation Head Unit. I want some fresher and newer look of the head unit controls and displays. I would like to be able to use the music on my iPhone, have better navigation screen, listen to Pandora etc. Including a head unit upgrade, I want to install a rearview camera and maybe if I can park distance control.

I have been reading about Dynavin, how to install it, but haven't come across how you like the product. I reall like the factory look of the Dynavin. I haven't seen any pictures of the Pioneer Appradio 3 installed in a X5. But it seems like it won't have the same appearance.

I want to keep the original factory look, I don't like for example how Kenwood Excelon DNX9990HD looks like in an X5. Here is a link of a video I saw for the Kenwood 2005 BMW X5 Kenwood DNX9990HD Radio Navigation Car Audio Upgrade Al & Ed's - YouTube

If this is the only way Kenwood Excelon is installed, I don't like that the X5 dashboard doesn't have it original apperance. The frame is completly gone. I hope you understand what I mean.

Thanks for any advice, review, pics or pointing me in the right direction.

My Appradio3 is there.

I like it alot.

PandaTrader 10-29-2013 02:08 PM

Thanks, factory look is what I look for. I don't like the appradio 3 doesn't look factory. I guess dynavin is the only option to go. Any experience how it performs?

e30cabrio 10-29-2013 02:11 PM

No clue but I can assure you it is nothing like having your phone in your dash.

PandaTrader 10-29-2013 02:13 PM

Yeah that is cool and I'm sure the functionality rocks. But I just want to keep the factory look.

PandaTrader 10-29-2013 03:07 PM

Actually, now that I am looking at your pics on a larger screen, it doesn't look so bad.

Are there any Dynavin user with feedback?

Sweep_the_Leg 10-29-2013 04:12 PM

Any double-din unit you get is going to look pretty much exactly like that Kenwood setup in the video you linked. Mine has that exact same bezel, it's just flipped so the narrower part is across the top instead of the bottom. I originally had it oriented like the Kenwood, but I think it looks better reversed.

I have had an AppRadio 2 installed for several months now. It was cheap with the rebate (effectively $280), but the functionality out of the box was actually really disappointing to me. First of all, you have to plug the phone in, then click through approximately 237 warning screens just to get to the apps screen (not really, but it seems like that). If you're using an iPhone, then you will be limited to full-functionality of Pioneer-approved apps (there's a list on their site). I listen to music almost exclusively by streaming it through Spotify, which isn't an Pioneer supported app. So, I decided to jailbreak my iPhone 4S and install AppRadio Extensions, which is a VERY cool Cydia tweak that essentially allows full mirroring of your phone's screen to the AppRadio. Here's a good video showing how it works:

Pioneer App Radio 2 & iPhone 4 Jailbreak - YouTube

If you run an Android phone, you're in luck, because there is an app called ARLiberator available which obviously doesn't require a jailbreak. Since I don't have an Android phone I'm not sure about its full capabilities, but it seems to do everything that AppRadio Extensions does (and maybe even more).

If you're wanting the dash to look as close to factory as possible and you still want to upgrade the factory system, then you might as well forget about anything but a Dynavin (or Eonon). Since I've never played around with a Dynavin, I can't say whether it would be better than an AppRadio (or another similar touchscreen double-din). But it probably doesn't offer quite the same flexibility that the AppRadio does.

I had Dynavin on my previous e53 and after having the factory radio in my new to me 4.8 I'm going to have to say I prefer factory. Dynavin does look almost identical to factory and the Ipod interface is great. My dislikes are the very poor CD display/use. Not that I use CD's much but it looks very outdated. Hit a small bump and it skips. The touchscreen isn't the greatest. When using the Navi I would have trouble typing in certain addresses. Sound quality was pretty good. Overall if your primary focus is to have a decent Navi with a great Ipod friendly radio then I would go with Dynavin otherwise I would stick with stock for me.

PandaTrader 10-29-2013 08:02 PM

Thanks, I have seen people doing MK4 Navigation Firmware updates. Is that possible and will the navigation look a little better?

4.8isguy 10-29-2013 08:07 PM

I've heard of people doing them. I'm planning on asking my local Indy if he is capable of doing it as well as adding in a backup camera. I haven't done ipod hookup yet. I've been meaning to research if someone has a way to keep the factory cd changer and allow use of Ipod. My navi has a Cassette player behind it.

PandaTrader 10-29-2013 08:09 PM

Mine too. How about BMW iPod aux cable. You can get installed to your glove compartment or ashtray.

puddinboo 10-29-2013 08:16 PM

I can`t stand the touch screen stuff lol it looks great and all but with my ocd with finger prints on the screen it will drive me nuts. :)

Cadesto 10-29-2013 09:07 PM

Ive got a dynavin or equivalant for sale. Loved it in my 04
Now have factory nav i liked the colors amd versatility of the aftermarket.
It model M 308. I can attach pics later if interrestd

X5Flyboy 10-29-2013 09:10 PM

Had my nav pulled for an Alpine INA-W900BT (now INA-W926(7)(8) screen size)3 yrs ago.

CD, AM/FM/HD radio, iPod, bluetooth, & nav - everything a new car gives including SiriusXM presently not installed, but I may add it sometime. Not bad for a 2001 X5

I keep an eyeglass cloth to clean the screen after turning off the ignition

Cadesto 10-30-2013 01:30 AM

This one came with a little plastic pen.. ( i dont have it anymore but any phone/ tablet pen works) Worked well to keep smugdes off..
PS Pledge forbelevtronic is a life saver!!)
I wasnt planning on selling etc.. But the 04 hit a semi truck tire on the highway and suffered some suspension damage.. Insurance totalled it.. Looked fine to me, easy fix so i thought (however the way insurance works is if the cost to repare and the price salvage is willing to pay they will total and sell it, my adjuster said they are paying top dollar for X5 right now) so i get a new one in black! Yay! :) .. Anyway I went to the tow yard "to find my glasses and cds" ;) and yanked anything i put on there in a jiffy! The 3 month old 20s i couldnt quite pull off! Lol. They thought it was decked out wit nav and what not.... Just jammed that biz cd player back in there half hanging out!
I loved the color schemes, easy use, touch screen, dvd player with music!! My 06 factory seems dated now. I would replace but dont want to lose the "brains" of the car, since this unit seems to take the place of the MID.. Im not entirely sure if thats true or not.

So lemme browse youtube, i know i saw my same model on there somewhere. Ive got a few pics of it installed on my phone. Only the splash screen and dash to give you a look at the install. The only thing missing is the Ipod cord which I zip tied into the glove box and couldnt get out, should be easy to find....

Also have the adapter to do the DSP amp trick with..
-sorry kind of wrong thread to sell stuff.. But i do have a good one if anyones interested.

Will reply on my phone with pics and links..
To be continued....

if your "smart" phone is capable of A2DP, and MHL video function, then you can stream your Pandora or web radio to the AUX input using the iLive BT receiver ($20 from Wal-Mart)... see the wiring harness i made for the AUX input, laying on the passenger seat on the picture...

If your phone is capable of MHL video streaming, you can stream the video to the AV input of your factory TV module (if so equipped!!!) via an HDMI to analog RCA converter ($30-40 from Amazon)... (see the wiring harness i made for the AV input - you see, in addition to the factory connectors, i installed the standard RCA connectors for the HDMI converter). If you have an HTC with the Media connection function, you can do the same with an HTC media device wirelessly...

As a result, you car remains completely stock, the only visual change is to attach the phone holder and supply the holder with power (no known way to provide power wirelessly yet), the transmission of the Audio and video done wirelessly with receving unit hidden away...

I am in process of accomplishing just that, once i get it all done, i will have it in my "To do list" thread...

PandaTrader 10-30-2013 09:25 PM

So does anybody have upgraded/ updated the firmware of the navigation? I heard some folks have modified it?

m5james 10-30-2013 10:14 PM

The biggest gripe I have about aftermarket decks in our dashes is the angle of the screen. I had a Pioneer X90BT in my first one and the screen was tilted back to the point where glare always got the best of it...roadtrips forced me to sit further upright to see the image better. I've still got a bezel that I've contemplated just selling and doing a custom 10" Android tablet nd having it sit completely vertical for the best viewing angle from all seating positions.

Here's a few pics of factory MKIV vs after market unit.. As well as some navigation upgrades I've done.. There is software called pimp my nav you can do this with .. Also there is a guy in England I believe at www.bwmsatnav.com (bwm isn't a typo). He can do it all for your splash screen etc.. And upgraded maps. As you can see the aftermarket has slightly larger screen plus cd in dash. Plus you don't have to eliminate your cd changer totally to use as iPod also has bluetooth phone and Bluetooth music + more color and customability options.. Maps are stored on micro sd card and runs iGo 8 gps? If I remember correctly.. Also an aux input and another sd card slot for mp3s etc and a mini USB in.. Lol it has a lot of options packed in there!! Also you can see pics of my spec dock from BSW hooked up to factory MKIV..Attachment 61009Attachment 61010Attachment 61011Attachment 61012Attachment 61013Attachment 61014Attachment 61015Attachment 61016

With a bypass I never see any warning screens.
My Jail Broken iPhone 5 is mirrored to the radio.

I still like look of factory MKIV compared to yours Cadesto, just my opinion.

However, the Dynavin is the closest to stock looking I've seen.

That's interesting. What kind? I thought I had a bypass installed, in that I can watch Netflix, MLB.tv, etc. without it being in Park, but I still have to tap "OK" on a couple warning screens before I get to the Apps menu.

e30cabrio 10-31-2013 11:51 AM

It is just a 2 pole switch. With the Appradio extensions app and things from here:
AVIC411.com

I made it 90% perfect.

Hey cadesto, so looking at your pictures your still have factory stock nav in there and updated firmwar/ software with pimp my nav, right? Also did you install the dynavin and test it? How did you like it? What was better?

PandaTrader 10-31-2013 06:48 PM

I came across this unit Buy BMW X5 DVD Player with GPS Navigation E53 2001-2007 Can Bus TV IPOD Singel Din 7 Digital Screen [8786] - $493.50 : Cars-electronics.com

doesn't look bad and seems to run fast.

Panda.. I have an 06 with factory nav now.. I pulled that Dynavin out of the 04 I used to have. So yes I've used and tested it.. I liked it a lot, esp the options I've already listed above.. A few things I didn't mention where all the color schemes, touch screen easy use instead of the jog dial button, and esp playing DVDs while driving, have lots of music concert DVDs and music video collections.. You can also load videos on sd cards or plug devices into the mini USB.. So all that was cool.. There was also like 30 voiced to choose from.. So if you don't have factory nav I highly recommend it.. In the case of the 04 it had business CD player. So I bought this. Now I have no use for it.. Open to offers. PM me

PandaTrader 11-01-2013 01:08 AM

How hard is it to install dynavin? Do I have to adjust frame? If I want rear camera, which one should I buy? Does dynavin offer updates?

eyeiieye 01-03-2014 02:22 AM

The dynavin will use stock radio tuner or it will bypass.
My radio tuner module is not working.
Thanks
