100.000 mile doctors appointment

Whew ....this was a big one. Inspection 1 and inspection 2
everything on the long list including .............

1. Replace Waterpump

2. Thermostat

3. Oxygen sensors

4. Spark plugs

5. Oil & filter change

6. Air filters

7. Brake fluid change

8. Check Adaptive headlight codes

9. Brake inspection

Still a few things left. Decision to change the transmission fluid and transfer case oil. Oil collection at eccentric shaft and cam position sensors. Power steering hoses have a very small leak.

The most expensive thing on the list (labor of course) was the Oxygen sensors, water pump and installation, spark plugs, brake fluid flush.....All and all I expected and planned for the repairs. Here's to happy motoring.

I hear you. I still need to change the Oxygen sensor and water pump on mine.

srmmmm 10-31-2013 02:54 PM

Why replace the oxygen sensors if you're not getting a CEL? Is your fuel mileage down?

I'm on my original water pump as well, although I do have the cooling system flushed every 100,000 miles. My first set of sparkplugs lasted 126,000 miles before a misfire was recorded, and it still wasn't enough to affect fuel mileage or idle quality.

I do use Shell gasoline exclusively though.

Hello gents, im at 122,000 and came back from the docs last night.

Changed all the plugs, VCG was brittle, broke into pieces trying to remove it, new expansion tank, temp coolant sensor, new O-rings. Now getting SES light with rought vibration on cold start up. any ideas? also, how should the X suppose to feel after new plugs?

Had the oil separator, water pump, coils, and brakes changed at 77,000.

Need Inspec 2, T-stat and radiator, and most likely hoses.

srmmmm 10-31-2013 11:52 PM

I couldn't tell any difference in engine feel with the new sparkplugs. Perhaps the misfire was picked up soon enough, and I had the plugs changed the next day, so that there wasn't any real change in performance from old to new. I have 116,000 miles on the current plugs and mileage on my last three tanks of fuel has exceeded 21mpg on all with about 70% highway driving involved.

I would go back and re-check all the plugs to make sure that they are seated correctly.

change your fuel filter too, and I did my alternator at 120,000. SO much easier to do maintenance in your driveway and end up need a tow.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak, my money is on the lower intake elbow being cracked/ripped.

srmmmm 11-01-2013 12:58 PM

:iagree: I'd vote on the intake boot as well. Mine went at 156,000 miles.

I had to get towed haha alternator went bad 30,k few months after purchase.

Today the Mech took the X back and said the vacuum plugs in the rear were bad, and the CCV hoses broke triggering the SES and rough idle. The boot looks good. Does this sound about right to you guys?

srmmmm 11-04-2013 05:56 PM

I wouldn't disagree with any of that on the CCV hoses, and my alternator went at 126,000 miles.

As I understand your posts the rough idle and SES happened directly after the mechanic worked on it. If that is the case, I would be suspicious of the work done or if the new problems were caused by him. It depends on how you feel about coincidences.

That's what I figured too. He showed me the parts of the CCV hose. It was broken at the neck. He showed me 4 others laying in his garage. It's insulated so probably when he was in that area it got moved. And a vacuum plug. Now run smooth. Cold start up, not even a slight vibration. With new plugs. Now running great.
Thanks for your concern though. I thought te same.

if your popping the VCG on an M54 you should really do the vanos seals. I didn't notice as much of a gain on my 25b e46 but on the e53 I definitely noticed. between that an a new DISA (mine had died), it was like a whole new car.

bcredliner 11-05-2013 11:32 AM

Great that problem was solved first shot.

740ilDuke 11-05-2013 12:04 PM

Definitely change the transmission filter and fluid and t-case fluid.

O2 sensors and spark plugs degrade over time. Is better to replace them before they cause noticeable problems. O2 sensors at 60,000 or so miles and plugs close to 100,000.

I change the fluid and filter every 50,00 miles but there are many that feel the fluid should never be changed--in case you are not aware.
