TX5, that's a pretty good price! Oh, and yeah, sealant would be a better term for it, not gasket. My bad.

I was comparing the BMW OE part with the old one. The joint of the OE has what seems to be reinforcements for the area with sealant. Also, the BMW OE tank mated together deeper and more flush than the non OE tank.

For the price you get them for, it seems not worth the time to attempt a repair on these things.

I have replaced three expansion tanks recently on three different BMW's an X5, X3 and a 320 and all three I used a Meyle expansion tank. I have found these to be very good

Thanks for sharing your experience, will keep it in mind because with BMW's, we all will be replacing tanks more than once anyway!

first - put your car info in your signature.

second - BMW doesnt make parts per se, they source them from suppliers. Suppliers then turn around and sell them with their brand on the secondary market. Other manufacturers take the product, reverse engineer it, and sell it on. SOmetimes, BMW ships back their surplus parts and they sell those ( you can tell when the roundel is ground off)

I can tell you from experience, to ALWAYS avoid MTC (perhaps it stands for Made in Taiwan or China - NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT)...

Meyle is a pretty reputable supplier and so is VAICO (they actually make the real DISA units IIRC)

I've never done on ET replacement (dont overfill and they dont burst ....knock on wood).

Assuming you have a 3.0, you can also check out the e46 forums for reviews of the various tanks.

Is it the same procedure on an X5? I replaced an ET on my E46 before. If not, is there a page here for a DIY on the X5? I have coolant leaking around the top of my ET. I actually have a spare used one that I took off the E46. I decided to replace it also while I was replacing a leaking radiator. I'm still hoping it might be the cap leaking tho!!! Have not checked it out closely yet.

Original Equipment, bearing BMW logo... was spanking brand new in factory box...

since i still have the old unit, I wonder, if I could split the top and bottom open, and then reseal them together, using some crazy sh!t thermoresistant, waterproof glue...

has anyone done that?

less than a year old u got warranty on the part if u bought from bmw dealer don't u?

Yessir, pretty much the same! If you've done it on an E46 this will be no problem.

The E46 and the E53 have the same expansion tank so the job is essentially exactly the same

Well, just to add to the party...

I will be replacing mine this coming weekend (probably not - I doubt the part will come in time).

Here's hoping this one doesn't blow (pun intended)...
