Who makes these clear headlights?

Does anyone know who makes this headlight? Where can I buy a set?

How do these compare to the depo p53 headlights?

Thanks

Spyder headlights on eBay, for pre-facelift.

I have not used this link for automotive headlights yet, so I'm not sure what's available. I do purchase truck (DEPO) lights at about 1/3rd the dealer cost. (The quality is great) They list numerous vehicles/models and the DEPO brand now appears to be available at local auto part stores. So who wants to be the ginny pig and let us know how it works out on BMW vehicles?

Depo - auto lamp, car lamp

I've never had "p53's" or whatever you call Depos for an e53. But I've now had or helped install multiple sets on three different models (36,46,39) and while they're an upgrade for old yellowed halogens, they're nothing to write home about. They're notorious for finicky, breakable adjusters (similar name, different problem) and IMO the beam pattern is a little sloppy. Their worthiness depends solely on what you have, what you want, and what you're willing to spend.

x2, tmv is right and so is the guy above about the Depo headlights. The Depo's are good, but they are more expensive than the Spyder headlights. I just did a retrofit of an EvoX-R projector (basically a supercharged bi-xenon OEM Hella design projector) into a set of these headlights for a member with a 4.6is. They have CCFL angel eyes which are good, you just need to wire them up to the car yourself, they don't come with a harness.

For OEM Xenon guys, you can take your internals out of your OEM headlights and swap into the Spyders, the halogen projector included in those headlights is a Hella E55 replica, so OEM projectors bolt right in. As well as OEM self leveling motors, back covers, etc. Truly a "facelift looking" set of headlights as you can tell by the pictures above (I can't say that about the Depo's, they still look somewhat aftermarket to me)

The black version of the Spyder headlights is currently on backorder from the manufacturer and I'm waiting on more sets to arrive. Currently the chrome version is available on ebay from some distributors, the shroud can be painted black to look like the headlights above.

If someone with a pre-facelift wants a set like this made and wants to send me all the headlights and parts needed, I will perform the retrofit for a small labor fee.

2001 with factory xenon.

The Spyders look good. I may consider painting the chrome version but if anyone finds the black version for sale, please let me know!

Thanks!

Is there any difference with the lights made by Sonar?

tmv 11-11-2013 06:49 PM

They should be from the same manufacture

Ricky Bobby 11-11-2013 09:01 PM

Sonar/Spyder is the same thing, the black versions are out of stock everywhere, most come from the same place in CA (Rowland Heights, City of Industry area) anyway as all shipments from China end up in Cali.

If the distributors on ebay are selling them, they are available, most of these ebay distributors have local speed shop websites as well, so if i see them on ebay, they are available. Not sure why another batch of lights takes so long to produce and manufacture, and although i appreciate my contact at Spyder letting me know they are still on backorder, he doesn't give me an ETA unless there is one in the system (currently no ETA, but on the last backorder there was a point where he said they were 6 weeks out from arriving), and also doesn't let me know when the order was placed for a new batch.

So basically if you're very patient, you can get a set in a few months perhaps of the black ones. However, if you're going to open them and swap xenon projectors in anyway, the chome versions would do just fine as a $5 Krylon Fusion flat black can will do the trick nicely.
