CD changer woes....think I need a good repair shop....

2 Attachment(s)
I recently bought a 6 disk changer on eBay. I know I know.
The cd changer does not work and I am looking for a place to repair it. There are none in my area that I can find. I am willing to ship it off for a reasonable and quality repair. Just making sure the issue isn't with my X5 or the install.

Not sure what it is so I don't know if I have DSP. When I hook the player up in my X5 the stereo shows "CD ERROR". I tried it in my E46 to see if that would work. It showed "CH CHECK" and never did anything else. I also hooked the changer from my E46 up in my X5 and it worked perfectly right off. At the insistence of the seller that it does indeed work, I unhooked my battery to maybe jumpstart it. No luck. The changer has some sort of jack on it that looks like the antenna hookup but I didn't see a cable in my truck. The changer is a 6512 6 913 390 as shown below

What vintage do they allege this cd changer is from?

jgold47 11-11-2013 02:15 PM

silly question, but you checked that fuse right?

Well I took it out and looked at it. I didn't check it on a volt meter. I can see a fine wire in the viewing window on it. When I hook the player up it makes a sound like it's attempting to start up. Not a moving cds around sound. Just a sound like it powers on. I also tried the cartridge from my other changer in it. Same results.

knucklebuster 11-11-2013 03:59 PM

try holding the unit vertical as it would sit in the M3 .

bcredliner 11-11-2013 04:32 PM

If you find that something is wrong with it, I have a 6 disc changer that I removed from my X that is sitting in my garage.

The connector that looks like an antenna connector is the coaxial cable connector that is used to connect to the DSP amp directly.

Wouldn't be the first time seller on eBay sold a piece of junk. If he advertised that it works but it didn't just file a grievance with eBay.

fuz9 11-11-2013 07:12 PM

Slightly OT, who honestly uses the cd changer? Don't most people get a DICE and disconnect their changer?

For what it cost to buy a BMW CD Changer I brought a Grom unit and never looked back. In fact I sold my old "Working" CD Changer here.

Cadesto 11-11-2013 08:40 PM

Ive got one out of my 06 X5 for sale.. Check the classifieds.
And IT WORKS :)

Ogopogo 11-11-2013 09:32 PM

My CD changer has the power light on, and makes various noises when you load the shuttle, but the head unit says "No Discs", even though the it's full (and yes.. loaded with the right side down). I've never known it to work. Good luck with getting yours up and running!

Didn't think of that. Will try it tomorrow. It has some adjustments on the sides for vertical and horizontal.
In my E46 the changer sits vertical ....sorta...with the cartridge opening facing up.

Thanks. I probably will have to send it back to the eBay seller and buy a different one.
How much do you want for yours? Be gentle :D

How do you tell if you have DSP?
Yeah I have bought a few bad items from eBay but always got my cash back...minus shipping of course.

I use my constantly when I am driving my E46.

The reason I have the CD changer in the garage is that I installed the first Dice and have upgraded each time they have a new product, now have the media bridge. All have worked great and only had to install the wiring once. Each upgrade uses the same harness. I have a Dice Silver with harness in the garage that I am not using either.

Cadesto 11-12-2013 08:56 PM

Bcred i have the silverline duo.. When you skip tracks from the steering buttons or nav buttons does it kind of go silent play a half second of the song your skipping then go to next track? Ive updated firmware etc.. Not a big deal just kinda annoying

I have never used one and don't know very much about them. Is there alot of wires to run? When I installed a Parrot handsfree bluetooth device in my E46 it wasn't all that bad. Just had to remove the glove box and some console items. Not a fan of taking the car apart due to so many clips and such that break easily and thus parts don't go back together the same as they were before.

Audiovox - Driven by DICE Electronics LLC - MediaBridge

The above websites should help. The install complexity varies by where your cd changer is located. I have DSP so I connected to the CD player in the rear. Regardless of the location of your CD player it is all plug and play. The installation took some time but it was not difficult, nothing broke and can't tell anything has ever been disturbed.

The following is an E46 installation that is very similar to what I did. Installing the DICE Media Bridge in a BMW or MINI, Part 1 of 2 - YouTube. I am extremely satisfied with the media bridge. I have the satellite radio add on which is great.

I now have the media bridge so I can't verify how the Siverline performed. I do remember I was very happy with the both the original Dice and the Silverline which was the reason I had no hesitation going to the Media bridge.

I use an iPhone 5 and connect using bluetooth option. I use the iPhone screen that shows all the tracks. I checked and I hear no difference in the time to change tracks on a disconnected iPhone, by changing tracks from the iPhone or when using the steering wheel controls. I have the latest firmware.

I don't know how good tech support is since Audiovox took the products over but it used to be excellent. Have you tried contacting tech support to see if the delay you are experiencing is normal?

bcredliner 11-13-2013 03:35 PM

I don't remember anything that annoyed me about the Silverline but can't say for sure if there was a delay or not.

Dice tech support used to be great. I don't know if tech support is still by Dice or by Audiovox. I would contact tech support and see if the delay you are experiencing is normal.

From what I have read on forums I don't have DSP. No speakers in right rear area. No DSP button on stereo. But it does "appear" I have an amp down below in the left trunk area just below the wiring for the changer. Didn't get the part number to check if it was an amp tho. Maybe thats something else or just a regular HiFi amp. Do both Dice/Audiovox units have the USB feature? Thats really all I'd need for music.

Cadesto 11-14-2013 05:38 AM

I used this video for install.. http://youtu.be/zdVWos2clyo (part 1 of 4)
Seems a little more intimidating than it ends ip being, maybe took 20-30 minutes.. No broken clips etc..
Part that made me most nervous was unbolting the seat.. But was really simple and got to vacuum out some hard to reach places while I was in there.. Very clean install esp wit the spec dock i got from them (BSW)
However I bought the Dice Duo elsewhere as it was half the price.. Bsw used to have the "dice" now they are calling it "soundplicity"
It looks exaclty the same, not sure if they are just rebranding it or what..
Didnt opt for media bridge either because I have factory bluetooth phone and have had in the past but hardly if ever used satelite radio..

Bcred, thanks ill check with the manufacture good idea ;) duh on my part lol

It appears that alll audivox did was change the name. Features are the same. I checked with Dice recently to find out if the current Media Bridge features are the same as when it was introduced and they are. I didn't check on the Siverline but since it preceded the Media Bridge my guess it is also the same as offered by Dice.

Do you have navigation?

No. I wish I did.

Unbolt the seat? Yeah I'll pass on that option. Thanks tho.

Removing the seat is VERY easy, just two nuts and two bolts. I used the 4 part video posted to do the install. If you check part 3 it will show removal of the seat.

The directions and the video were intimidating to me, especially since I seldom do projects where I am messing with existing wiring. If you just accept you can always get help or take it to someone that can complete it if you can't and take your time checking your work as you go you will do just fine. If you don't have the plastic trim tools I would get them before you start.

If you are interested in doing more DIY, this is a project that will contribute to the confidence to do so.

My main issues is that in various post on different forums I have read about people unhooking their seats and getting dash light errors they can't get rid of. My cd changer hookup in in the rear. Would you still have to run wires all thru the truck?

bcredliner 11-14-2013 03:39 PM

When you remove the seat you don't need to disconnect any wires, you just need to tip it toward the console.

My CD was also in the rear. Yes, you will need to run the wires from the trunk to the front. No biggie, just takes time. Check out the 4 videos by Bavauto. First one was posted earlier.

If you just want to put your music on a usb drive, here's the kit for you.

The Mediabridge costs around $220, add about $50 if you want satellite radio. It does have a USB connection so can use a thumb drive or iPod. All features are controlled with existing steering wheel and/or radio controls.

If you only want to be able to use a thumb drive the Grom adapter only costs around $100. Depends on the features you want now or might want in the future.

I am not that versed on the Grom specifics, Upallnight can help you with that--- if it will work in your X , install, features, etc.

Yeah I am ok with using a thumb drive. I have a ton of songs already as mp3s on my computer. Thanks for the info.
