INPA setup help

I have been a little curious to all the supposed programming that can be done to a BMW so I got a K+DCAN USB cable. I have searched and spent hours going through tutorials on the web and pretty much every tutorial goes a different route (different software combinations, different versions, different platforms, etc.).
So long story short, I think I have all the software installed but when I launch INPA both the battery and ignition show OFF. However when I run D-CAN.exe (command line utility) and select K+CAN it seems to connect and work fine but can't get it to work with INPA
I do see a red light when on the USB cable when I plug it into the car.

Here is a short list of what I have done. (Running under Window 7 64 bit)

1.) make sure the port is set to COM1 in Device Manager and Latency is set to 1 msec.
2.) Add a 'path' environment variable with a value pointing to EDIABAS\BIN on the hard drive.
3.) Run OBDSetup and it says 'All done.'
4.) obd.ini in EDIABAS\BIN has the following: (first few lines)
[OBD]
Port=Com1
Hardware=USB
Retry=ON
....
5.) Ediabas.ini has the following
Interface = STD:OBD
...

6.) Also tried setting the RemoteHost and Port to 192.168.68.1:6801.

But have had no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

INPA - Loader Version 5.00

I tried for two months & bought 4 (yes FOUR) cables including BMW Scanner. To get INPA/GT1 working I ended up with the Romanian deal from eBay and even after installing it needed the seller to remote in to get it going.

I strongly suggest you skip to the Romanian deal.

puddinboo 11-17-2013 01:11 AM

I just ordered from the romanian yesterday for the cable and software. (my xmas present yeah) I hope it all goes well when I install it. :)

the Romanian deal sounds good, but just in case you want to try it on your own, i got mine working following this guide.

good luck

Successful Install of INPA and EDIABAS on Win 7 - BMW M5 Forum and M6 Forums

That gives INPA but not DIS/GT1, SSS/PROGMAN NcsExpert etc.

You need virtual machine for most of the rest which adds to the difficulty.

Thanks. Not doing anything critical and just wanted to mess around so I'll give that guide a try first.

how much GB of space we need for this to run properly? I am getting ready to contact the romaian buy since i purchsed from him to help me. I am only getting error msg when i hook it to the vehicle.

puddinboo 11-17-2013 02:35 PM

Your PC requirements:
- works on Win XP, Vista & Win7 both 32bits and 64bits
- USB port
- at least 35Gb free hdd space, 1Gb Ram, 1.5Ghz CPU
- just copy and run DIS & SSS without wasting time installing from scratch

Bimmerforums has a great diagnostic section that has many helpful users than can get INPA working for you. I basically pieced together all the guides on bf.c and got INPA and GT1/DISv44 working on my Dell D630 running Vista Business.

I had probably the most difficult situation, since I wanted to run the programs in a Macbook, using Parallels Desktop. The Romanian guy is super helpful and very reliable. I eventually decided to use Boot Camp instead of Parallels and I got everything working, by just following the Romanian guy's instructions. Super easy.

However, I still haven't tried DIS and the other programs that require a Virtual Machine to be run into, but INPA and NCSExpert work just fine.

xRide 11-18-2013 08:26 AM

I get error "IFH-0018: INITIALIZATION ERROR, Program will be stopped" when i'm trying to use INPA.

This, very helpful software section. Contact a guy with the user id of "Randomly" he has DVD's available for cheap with everything you need, including complete install instructions. He can also remote into your computer and get it set up with out too much trouble.

Many of the forum have purchased the software package from the following: BMW USB OBD Diagnostic Cable Inpa Ediabas Dis SSS GT1 Easy Self Installer | eBay

I used this vendor because he had a great Ebay rating and many others here were very satisfied with their purchase from this source.

You will only need the connector that comes with the software. Many of us have dedicated a Windows XP based laptop to the software because the software requires quite a bit of disk space and it is more convenient to do so.

If you go this route the software will load automatically and if it doesn't there are several here that can help you through the process. I have found the seller to be helpful and responsive.

There are also apps that connect wirelessly to your phone that will give you info on the go. You need a wireless connector to do so.

If you followed the instructions and got verification the list of steps on the screen were completed successfully it should work.

Check the instructions as their is a specific order to turn on the key and connect the cable.

I think the software is installed properly as I followed all the steps.

Lets says I want to use inpa, are there step by step instructions from start to finish ? For example, should I start the program before I connect it to the vehicle . Should the vehicle be running. Does my battery had to have certain amount of juice . I can't figure out why I'm getting a error message when I tried to use inpa. I'm trying calibrate the suspension and when I press e53, then select chassis, then double click on 2 axle suspension, it doesnt go any further except giving me an error msg that program will be stopped.

sv1cec 11-18-2013 03:01 PM

Do you get the two black circles when you start INPA, and before selecting chassis?

If not, then your system is NOT talking to the car.

xRide 11-18-2013 03:34 PM

I get a tiny black circle on the left side...

There are two more circle that says OFF which are not black. One for battery and one for ignition.

At the bottom it says...running..in green. Once I press chassis, then double click on ..2-axle suspenaion..the ..running, which is in green says....busy..in amber..which then pops up the error.

sv1cec 11-18-2013 06:08 PM

You computer is not talking to the car. Something is wrong. It can be the cable, or it can be the program, most probably the assignment of the COM port.

I did assign it to com1 per instructions when installing the software.

But ill look into that again.

xRide 11-19-2013 06:02 PM

Finally has some progress with this. seems like either the USB port I was using was no good or my set up of COM1 was no good. I chose a different USB port and reconfig COM1 and it seems like its working fine

bcredliner 11-19-2013 07:55 PM

The particular USB port you configured is the only port the software will function .

Thank you. Do I have reconfigure this if i shut the computer down or its set for this port unless i reconfigure it for something else?

sv1cec 11-20-2013 05:51 AM

No, you do not have to reconfigure the port, once it is done.

And yes, you have to connect the cable, turn the key to position 2 and start INPA. The engine doesn't have to run, but it doesn't matter if it does.

xRide 11-20-2013 09:11 AM

Thanks for the tips guys.
