Just bought a 2006 X5 4.8is 100k km
 

So I bought a 328is to convert into a racecar and my Audi S4 won't cut it for towing. Found a 2006 X5 4.8is with 100,100kms for $18k.

Its a decent deal, but it has some problems which brought the price down and I purchased it as-is from a dealer. The managers were getting pretty flustered the more stuff I found and offered less and less.

• Sunroof doesn't open or even action the cover back,
• parking sensors do not work,
• the LP line on the power steering pump is leaking,
• there is a permanently mounted battery charger in the engine compartment.
• This makes me think it has drain issues.
• The all seasons that are on it are like iceskates.

How much of a headache will those things be to fix? Any special tools I should buy? Whats the best electronic interface to buy to monitor / modify the systems on the X?

I think parking sensors should be an easy fix - i hear a lot of them get corroded and need to be cleaned... i know my car had this done around the same mileage.
As for the diagnostic tool - i think NCS and GT1 are the most commonly used...

haha I definitely did. Was not expecting this much snow.

Good to hear about the parking sensors.. they are not a big deal but nice to have all functions working.

I'm grabbing some snowtires tomorrow. 18's with 255's should give some useable traction.

What work scope comes up on the 100k interval?

The list you have there is not a huge deal, and shouldn't require any special tools.

As for software...by the sounds of it you know your way around bimmers, and as such would highly recommend the inpa/gt1/dis/ncs suite from our romanian friend off ebay!

Hopefully you're not going to be towing snowmobiles with the X because it's not the Best truck to be using during the cold season. At least you have an Audi for the snow.

The problems your X has are common and have been discussed on this board, so you will be able to find help here. And if you can do the work yourself, it won't cost you too much.

The X5 is a good car for towing, especially with the additional power of the 4.8is. I was towing my car with an extended E250 before, and the X5 is more stable and more powerfull, and obviously more comfortable. Have fun with your X!

That's a good deal you got, with minor/easily fix problems.

Based on what, if I might ask? The PO of ours (a good friend) has always raved about it worked in the winter.

Search is your friend on this board. Search for cold problems X5 in this forum.

Glad to hear they are simple problems. I plan to do all the work myself unless somehow I don't have the special tools or time. Also good to see fellow albertans on here!


Picked up some skinny snowtires today.

255/55R18's should be tight over the brakes as the ID of the wheel is ~17.75" but they came off a 4.4i. 1.33% oversized from stock diameter.

Now to find some spacers and get rid of the rediculous sucked in look it will have on the rear.
