N62 Waterpump (Coolant) DIY?

OK, I am going to replace my water pump next week.

I am looking for any information I can find on the job but my Bentley is useless and I do not see anything here on-line.

The pumps range from about $60 to $200 at the local parts store.

Questions:

Does anyone have a negative experience with any reman or new manufacturer pump?

Does anyone know of a good DIY?

Beside the pump, fluid, hoses, belt, and thermostat, can anyone suggest other parts that should be replaced?

Water Pump Replacement

Top result on google... I also replaced the pulleys, they're easy enough to do later on but just did it while i was in there...

Thanks good information. It will certainly help if I can't get a diy specifically for the X5.

Belts, hoses, thermostat, all come off, and you have access to the tensioner pulleys and idler pulleys, so lots of "while you are in there" stuff.

Here's an important safety tip: don't wing an air blower nozzle around near the oil cooler. If you hit the cooler with the tip of the air nozzle, you'll be hating life. BTDT.

Remember, if you plan to keep the belts, mark their direction of travel so you reinstall in so the belts are moving in the same direction.

I bought a new pump when I did my replacement.

Same engine - nothing you are doing is specific to the X5, it is purely engine specific so it'll be almost exactly the same.

The only thing I'll mention is that I didn't remove the skid plate - you can if you want but you don't have to...

I'd replied before, but can't find it...

Would you happen to know if thee are any packaging/clearance issues related specificly to the X5?

The radiator fan comes out reasonably easily - two tabs up the top which need to come out and some electrical connections one on each side.

There are 3 clips that hold two hoses running along the bottom of the radiator fan on the engine side which you need to clip them out and move the hoses away from them then the fan will slide straight up. Once you've got it out you'll have plenty of space to do the rest.

When putting the radiator fan back in make sure you push it hard against the radiator as you're letting it fall down as there are little tabs that need to slot in.

and be VERY careful when removing and installing the fan. The fan easily contacts the small hose coming out of the side of the overflow tank. If you bump this hard, it will crack off.

Old thread bump... Hidden lower coolant pump bolt behind damper pulley can be loosened and removed using a flex ratcheting wrench. I used a craftsman 10mm. Did not have to remove the damper pulley.
