Drive Lock?????

Hey guys. Once I explain this issue to you, I'm hoping there is a logical explanation (yeah I know it's an oxymoron when it comes to the X).

Since I'm not expecting too many more warm days here in Chicago, I decided to put my winter wheels and tires on. Here's exactly what I did. Put the wheel chocks behind the back wheels, loosened the front lug nuts on both wheels. Jacked up the entire front end, took off the lug nuts, took off the wheels and put the other set on, put lug nuts back on, lowered, tightened lug nuts. Put the chocks in front of the front wheels, loosened the lug nuts, jacked up the entire back end, took lug nuts off, replaced wheels, put lug nuts back on, lowered, tightened lug nuts. Sounds easy enough right??

Well, I hopped in to take it around the block and it would move. It went into gear, I could feel it trying to go, but it wouldn't. So silly me, I though maybe I left the chocks up front (I know that's what you were thinking), but I didn't. I looked all under it to make sure nothing was snagged or grabbing or preventing forward movement. Nothing. I put it in reverse, same thing. Transmission engaged, gave gas, felt like it wanted to go, but nothing. I checked the parking brake to make sure that wasn't the issue (because that's sorta what it felt like....leaving the parking brake on).

:dunno:

Any ideas as to what the heck happened?

Thanks

Do the wheels you just installed need shorter lug bolts?

No. The wheels/bolts were on there when I bought my X last year. I actually bought a set of OE wheels. Same lug bolts.

so you loosenned the wheels off with the vehicle on the ground and then jacked it up is that correct?

Yes. When I say loosen, I mean just enough to "crack the seal" so to speak. Not take them all the way out or even half the way out.

What size and offset are the wheels

e30cabrio 11-21-2013 07:09 PM

Have you driven on these wheels? if not are they contacting the calipers?

:iagree:Hats off to you! Well done on the analysis.

Not sure of the offset. Yes I've driven on these wheels. They were on there when I bought it. So no they are not contacting the calipers.

e30cabrio 11-21-2013 07:28 PM

Can you have someone give the car a bit of gas while you look/listen for contact?

Something is binding somewhere.

Alternatively, remove the wheels one at at time and see if there is contact evidence?

e30cabrio 11-21-2013 07:31 PM

Are they offset sizes? I have 19/9 front & 19/10 rear

If they are different widths it is possible one or more are swapped & contacting?

puddinboo 11-21-2013 07:34 PM

I`m thinking parking brake seized or calipars seized thats the only logical answer I can give you. someone else might think of something else though. its only changing wheels what possibly could go wrong.

Jack up both rears at the same time and attempt to turn one of the wheels by hand. If they don't move, take them off and make sure the hubs will turn. Repeat the process on the front if necessary to locate the problem.

Yeah. Who would think changing wheels would cause a frikkin issue?? LOL. The wheels are all the same size and offset. No idea how it may have happened, but it does sound like something is binding. Guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

keep us updated im curious .

e30cabrio 12-01-2013 09:27 AM

What was the cause?

Sounds like the ABS is locking up the brake. Try disconnecting the battery.

Sorry for the late response guys. Apparently when I took the new tires to be placed on the new wheels, and the aftermarket wheels taken off, there was a spacer that the a**hole a the tire shop didn't return to me. He just gave me the wheels and tires back and kept the spacers. Guess where I'm going today??????

I hope he does not claim no knowledge.

Sorry.

So are the winter wheels OE or aftermarket? If they are the OE, which I'm guessing is true although hard to follow in this thread, your lugbolts are binding because they are too long.
Don't put spacers on the OE wheels if they are the correct staggered wheels for your iS. Just get a set of OE lug bolts that are the correct length for your OE wheels, and only use the long bolts with the aftermarket wheels.
Definitely make them replace the spacers with similar or better if they have 'mysteriously disappeared' from the shop already.
