You lost the water pump. Look at all the spooge on the fan blades. It's heavier in the center, not the outside edges. If the outside edges were coated, I'd suspect the expansion tank. Inside, water pump.
From the look of the coolant, you don't have the proper coolant in the system (it should be blue). Recommend you replace the thermostat, wp, and both belts. If your hoses haven't been replaced and are original, now is a good time to change the hoses as well. |

Edit: The order of failure suggests the belt sliced through a hose on its way off the drive. What caused the belt to come off the drive? Inspect your tensioner, etc. |
Pouring water in the system is a good idea. It'll show you where the leak is. You could also grab the water pump and I'll bet it has play in the bearing.

Yikes! Hope there wasn't much damage. :(

thanks all. flying back today so ill have it towed to the shop. the coolant was blue pouring out the bottommust be the dirt etc making it look like a diff color.

When the waterpump fails/bearings let go, even a brand new belt is thrown/shredded.
I found the waterpump roller bearings on the plastic lower engine shield post failure 3yrs ago. FYI, the BMW coolant is blue. |
yeah so the water pump did fail causing the belt to shred. quoted 7hrs labor to replace.
|
7 hrs labor? Wow! I can believe it would take ME 7 hrs, but I'm a slow-poke shade tree home mechanic with amateur tools. I'm thinking 3 hrs tops for a pro, to replace water pump & belts. Oh, well, maybe they are at least using that time to do you a really good job with a pressure test, checking and/or replacing idler & tensioner pulleys, etc., to rule out other problems.
Do hope you suffered no engine damage. Once it's run hot like that, keep an eye on your hoses and radiator for leaks over the next few weeks/months. My wife's X5 ran hot back on Easter Sunday due to a failed upper radiator hose flange. Radiator started leaking on the side shortly after that, and I had to replace it. I'm looking to go ahead and replace all my other hoses now, too. |

7 hours is highway robbery. I could replace it in 3 hours, tops (and I've done it once, it's pretty easy). Find a new shop for any future work. No way the book rate is 7 hours. |
:( kinda at their mercy. I just want my car back
