I have a 4.8 cluster in my 2002 x5, courtesy of Paul at Fixels. Works great, including the warm-up lights on the tach and the oil temp gauge.

Pic of it on the overland thread… https://xoutpost.com/1205044-post156.html.

If the mileage is lower that the donor, after coding, the instrument cluster should update the mileage from the Lamp Module(transferred from the EWS module) usually within the first 11-20 miles of driving. If your modifying the VIN you might as well update the mileage while your in there. Some eeproms cannot be over written and must be replaced with a new one.

thanks all for your reponsesl.
I haven't even plugged this 4.8iS cluster into my 2005 4.4i yet to see if all clusters work yet, but I did run the part number adn it is from a 4.8iS (not an e39M5 or 4.6iS thankfully).
I'll research more how to clear the problems (VIN/Mileage/tamper dot), with my software soon tho.
I didn't think the Oil Temp and RPM LEDs worked automatically tho... I so thought coding was necessary, but this is amazing to hear. Light at the end of the tunnel. The ONLY thing I will not like about going to this cluster is the fuel gauge on my Canadian (and perhaps other country models) is in L and not quadrants (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, F) as I like how BMW does that compared to almost all other manufacturers. But, first world problems there :)

I will be cheering for your success with this project  I have been wanting to do this to my 05 4.4i forever now and all of my searching turned up "it's possible" but never the real raw detail on how and exactly what you got for the effort; I am excited this came back up! :D

So Its not as straight forward as swapping in 4.8iS cluster into LCI 4.4i (with high cluster) for me, and having gauges all working.
I swapped hardware and upon turning key on the RPM lights aren't working and neither is oil pressure (car was just turned off so engine was hot, and i eve started x5 to see iff gauge worked but sadly neither did).
Of course the tamper dot and mileage (less than my vehicle actually has) and VIN all need to be corrected through PASoft (i cant seem to find another software that will do it, and that sucks as i don't have a cable for PASoft, but I do for every other software on my bmw laptop (insert disappoitment here).
At least i could verrify every pixel and light bulb worked :)
so, I guess I have to buy the PASoft cable and then learn to use that software to install this cluster...but shouldnt the RPM leds work already?

this e46 post has a nice how to guide for using PASoft. first pst in thread. https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/...ccess.1130431/

You need a DME update to get the oil temp and warm up lamps working. As mentioned, Paul at Fixels can provide this. I don't think the mileage can be adjusted by PA Soft. I tried to do it with my cluster before sending it off.

Thanks Txyaloo, I'm not going to send the Cluster off, as it needs no repairs to pixels/LEDs and if its a software thing, then chances are I can update it since I have all the software, I just need a hardware cable and figure out the DME update you speak of.

Update: I performed an INPA cluster test on this used (lower mileage cluster) and the RPM LEDs nor the speedo gauge work, so this is where the project stops for me.
I'm not willing to spend that much time or money to get a 4.8iS cluster in my X5 since mine works 100% already and I like the looks of it. It was a reallllly good price from a friend who pulled it from a pick-n-pull yard but besides that, I will stick to my factory 4.4i cluster and still be very happy (minus the dumb "fuel usage" gauge).

Nice try! Had my fingers crossed for sure, but it pays to know when enough is enough

The 04 4.4 x5 uses the N62? Most are swapping the 4.6 or 4.8iS clusters into the M62tu 4.4 with the DME modifications. Not sure I have ever seen it dine for the N62 4.4. Mine is fully functional in my E38 M62tu.

Clockwork 09-23-2022 11:57 AM

Right!!! Most are swapping the e39M5 or 4.6iS cluster into M54 or M62 powered x5s and not a whole lot of talk of LCI 4.4i's getting the 4.8iS clusters ... Except for a few and Killcrap being one. I wished I was one of the few and would have loved to explain the install a bit more but not gonna happen for this guy :(
