Finally Have A Reason to Get Rid of the X5!!

Well it looks like it's time to get rid of my 2002 X5 4.6is...and go ahead and purchase my dream SUV, a Grand Cherokee SRT8, if I sound excited it's because I am...lol! So here's what happened, started it up yesterday morning, hear this clicking, clacking noise, immediately shut it down, start it again, same noise, shut it down again. Fire up the laptop, do a search here, (this site is awesome) found two threads that have the exact same symptoms, looks like the timing chains guides need replacing. Looks like it's an expensive (even if you DIY) and time consuming job, so now I have justification (more for my wife...lol) to get a 1st Gen SRT8. I haven't decided if I'll fix it before I get rid it, if anyone in Northern California wants to shoot me an offer, PM me.

Now for those of you driving high mileage V8's if you hear a noise that sounds like an old GM power steering pump whining/failing (prior to the clicking clacking noise) it's the timing chain guides, check out the two threads below.

Your resignation has been rejected by the board... :dunno:

Thanks for the heads up and enjoy the SRT8 ;)

tmv 12-10-2013 01:20 PM

Should have replace the Timing Chain Tensioner when you have "Marble in a Can" sound at start up. When you have a " Diesel" sound, it's too late and the Timing Chain Guide need to be replaced.
GL with your choice. I'd rather replace the Timing Chain Guide and enjoy the 4.6iS, even though the Cherokee SRT8 isn't a bad replacement.

giodog2000, you have N62 engine in your 4.8iS, not the M62TU in the 4.6iS. I haven't heard or see thread about its chain guide. You have the rear main seal to deal with though.

Ricky Bobby 12-10-2013 02:58 PM

sure I'll take the 4.6 with bad chain guides, I'll ship it out to my indy to do the work.

Problem is, i won't be paying you top dollar for it.

You might try a shady sale to a local with no test drives, but if you drive it much its really a ticking time bomb, and we already know how rare the 4.6 engine is (and a lot it seems have been dying lately), gosh i hope you let it go cheap enough to a member on the boards who can fix it up nice, drive it and enjoy it!

What other maintenance does it need and what are the color combo/options/specs on it and how many miles?

I got a couple of more years with my X before I start looking for a SRT.

Brandon002 12-10-2013 07:17 PM

I have a buddy with an SRT8 pushing around 750hp after a ton of mods, engine boring, blower etc.. It's a bad a$$ truck, but I still prefer my X5 as it drives 100x better, feels more solid and the quality of materials in the cockpit are lightyears above the SRT.

puddinboo 12-10-2013 09:46 PM

a dodge wil be a dodge no matter what I worked on those things for over 10 years at a dodge dealership ,dodge takes to many short cuts on their vehicles not much quality control . even when I worked at the dealer we wouldn`t buy dodges just for that reason. but other manufactures might be the same way who knows ,but what I know and had to deal with at dodge , customer service sucks and give clients a hard time about warranties all the time. because of headoffice is a big headache. even for us working for them.

admranger 12-10-2013 11:22 PM

SRT? Pfffft.

Land Rover Sport with the supercharged V8. You'd be a regular footballer if you had one of those!

tmv 12-11-2013 09:57 AM

^LR Range Rover Sport S/C
Ask X5SND about his.

04e53x5 12-11-2013 10:11 AM

If I was going to get rid of my x (which will never happen) id go straight to the ml 63. The RR is not a bad choice too;)

racingbmwm3 12-11-2013 01:49 PM

Yes, please don't run the engine anymore. Not enough of these in existence to let it get turned to scrap.

Well of course I won't get top dollar for it if I don't fix it, that's a no brainer. If I get the SRT8 sooner rather than later I don't care, I would just want to get it out of my garage. I didn't drive it and won't drive it, I'm driving my C5 Corvette for my daily driver, plus it's a lot more fun rowing through that 6spd gearbox...lol! Here's a list of what I've done and what it needs.

What I've Done.
Jan 2011: New Ceramic Brake Pads and 4 Rotors
June 2011: Installed BG Front Lowering Springs, Rear Lowering Links
Mar 2011: New Bosch +4 Plugs
July 2011: Upgraded All Lights to LED, both Interior and Exterior, my X has no filament light bulbs at all, Fogs are HID 4300K
Aug 2011: Installed Powerflex Thrust Rod Bushings
Oct 2012: New water pump and both Belts
Nov 2012: Replaced Vavle Cover Gaskets
Jan 2013: Replaced Radiator, Expansion Tank and all cooling system hoses
July 2013: Upgraded the Cargo Cover to the retractable type
Aug 2013: Replaced Alternator

What it needs
1. Front passenger Outside Door Handle and window clips need replacing, I have the clips.
2. Right Rear Window Regulator, I have the part.
3. Left Rear Outside Door Handle
4. And of course Timing Chain Guides

Info: 2002 X5 4.6is, black on black, 200700 miles, interior and exterior paint is in great condition.

Yeah I here ya, I used to work at a BMW dealership in the mid 90's, and we felt the same way about BMW, wouldn't own one...lol! And believe me, BMW to this day aint the poster child for quality and reliability...lol!

Well with 200k miles, I guess you got your moneys worth out of the original guides? LOL!

I've owned 3 crystler/dodge cars and compared to my 02 4.6is, they are the worst things on the planet. Your going to wish you had your x back because I never even trusted my 06 srt8 to go to the grocery store, my 4,6is with 128k miles has had a few little fixable issues but it's never left my stranded and always gets me home unlike the pos Jeep.

bcredliner 12-11-2013 04:34 PM

Great choice!

I have followed the evolution of the GC SRT8 and the performance mods offered by Hennessey.

You got 200,000 miles out of your timing chain guides.

RRSS is too poverty for footballers, Bentley and Maserati are more their speed. With a RRSS you're just another guy with a comfortable ride and 510hp under the right foot! :) Interior of the RRSS blows the doors off BMW (we won't even mentions dodge as their millennia behind in This regard, lol)

I didn't say premiere league. :D

Maybe just a US college American football star then. Really, they bought it with their own money, not a booster donation.

The Top Gear segment on the 2014 RRSS was epic. What a monster.

ezrax5 01-07-2015 06:35 PM

Did you replace the guides?

^ exactly what I was thinking, they haven't made a good jeep since amc existed, there are a lot of SUVs out there Id kill for a g63 amg what an amazing vehicle. I'd say really take your time and drive a few other vehicles. Doing the chains isn't that terrible I did them in my e38 and it was a lot less scary than you think

ants_oz 01-07-2015 09:33 PM

My last Jeep had to visit the dealer 18 times in the 14 months I owned it to have warranty repairs made.

Never again.

puddinboo 01-07-2015 09:54 PM

buddy of mine that I told not to get a jeep Cherokee got one this summer ,6 months down the road the tranny went in it. SO STAY AWAY FROM DODGE. I worked at a dodge dealer ship and I stayed in touch with the mechanics there ,and they obviously still have issues with tranny`s . now its been at least 2 weeks without his vehicle.

My 05 Ram 2500 4x4 has been pretty much bullitproof as long as I've owned it, which has been 6 years. Original tranny with 134K, just preventative maintenance, and no issues whatsoever. I take my Ram places I wouldn't even consider taking my X5. I do know Dodge has some build issues however, but I don't believe I got one of them.

LOL....One is a heavy duty truck, the other is a light duty SUV. One has "proper' 4wd, the other an "all wheel drive" system with uneven torque split - of course you can take a "real" 4wd places you would never consider going in a "dirt carpark special".

Using the Dodge as for purposes much lighter than it's designers intended, I would be VERY surprised if you had any major dramas with it.

^^^bingo. Apples to oranges here. Jeep GC to X5 is a better comparison, and trust me its no poster child for reliability.

thrillcat 01-08-2015 11:50 AM

I came to the X5 after a pair of Jeep Commanders. I loved them. I had an '08 that I racked up 98K on really quickly. Didn't do anything to it outside of brakes and tires. Traded that in for a '10 to get back to 30K miles. Took that up to 65K and had to replace the battery in it. Was having AC issues when I traded it for the X5 this summer.

I loved the Commanders.

JEM 01-11-2015 04:04 PM

When you hear the clatter PARK IT NOW. You will find all your horseshoe cam guide plastic in the oil pan.

If doing it yourself it's $1000 in parts, $250 in tools if you can't rent or borrow (or just have enough M62 cars around to warrant buying them), and a crapload of labor.

Doing our 540 now, 196k. Taking me forever 'cause I decided to do heater hoses, sand down and clear the headlights, remove the dinan CAI, etc. and parts ordering got delayed thru the holidays.
